Truly Zac Posen Bridal 2016

zac posen wedding dress

Here come the brides! NY Bridal week is taking over Gotham just as the city starts to bloom. Zac Posen unveiled his latest collection in collaboration with David's Bridal Wednesday under the Truly Zac Posen label.

Many luxury designers have partnered with more mainstream retailers for a smaller, more affordable bridal collection. I found that many of the cheaper versions of a designer's brand were exactly that, cheaper. They don't look like the designer's work; they don't reflect the aesthetic and not surprisingly, they don't look like luxury.

With Truly Zac Posen, the price tag for the most elaborate gown tops out at $1850. That might not be cheap by sportswear standards, but still affordable in wedding gown standards. There were similar florals, color palettes and silhouettes to his recent collections. However, the fabric quality, while similar in texture, was noticeably not the same (then again, his top tier collections can be 10X the prices here.)  There were beautiful ballgowns that swished extravagantly though slightly deflated from the biggest skirts of his main runway. The David's Bridal budget can afford less petticoats..

A good designer knows how to achieve expensive looks no matter what the budget. There were still embellishments like bonded lace appliques, feathers and pearl beads. Lace pricing can vary wildly as can pearls. The trick is to choose wisely and with a great eye.

As a New Yorker, we love lean towards a darker palette. We don't necessarily need to be all dressed in white. Many modern brides are happy to wear a gorgeous black or brightly colored gown down the aisle.

If you are a contemporary bride with a modest budget and lofty dreams, Truly Zac Posen might be your the fashion Godfather to grant your wish.

Zac Posen and Naomi Campbell - NY FASHION WEEK

naomi campbell
coco rochas zac posen
How gorgeous are these gowns? Zac Posen's Spring 2013 fashion show for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was a stunner on all fronts.  It brought supermodels Naomi Campbell and Alek Wek back to the runway. Other star models included Coco Rochas and Erin O'Connor.

The opening saw Naomi Campbell stroll down the terrace of Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall in a demure, floral printed ensemble.  The pretty romantic florals soon gave way to immaculate full length gowns. Amazing pleated details were manipulated into luxury fabrics like silk organza, satin, taffeta.  Alek Wek sauntered down the runway in a dark fishtail gown with blooms as accents and delicate folds of fabric.  Coco Rochas breezed by in a voluminous, bride-worthy gown.  Jewelry was glittering and full of elegance.

Half the cast of America's Next Top Model were on hand to admire the show as well as top bloggers The Man Repeller and BryanBoy who huddled together and traded accessories.  Madonna's fashion mogul in training Lourdes Ciccone was in the audience as well as tough glamour girl Gina Gershon.
Unfortunately, the show did not go off without a hitch...Naomi was late to arrive (I could overhear all of the communication from my spot in the media riser).  The PR company was at odds with Lincoln Center management, and were forced to remove a number of seats at the last minute due to fire codes.  (The poor pregnant producer was yelled at by Lincoln center management right at the start of the show). A foreign French representative of publisher Jalou, Marie-José Susskind-Jalou and her tag-along daughter Jennifer Eymere were therefore some of the guests left without seats. While the overworked Lynn Tesoro, one of the top PR mavens of NYC was trying to multi-task, the mother (or daughter) lost patience and assaulted her.

Now, anyone who has ever attended Fashion Week has experienced the inexperienced, snotty PR assistant who was driven power-mad by her clipboard, and sometimes you want to slap them...But, there is a BIG difference from imagining something in your head to grown adults actually acting on a violent impulse.  I cannot imagine an experienced person like Lynn Tesoro was anything but professional, if possibly a little weary.  I saw first-hand the difficulty with the seats at this show, and it was a situation beyond their control.

Most guests, even A-list celebrities I observed, have always been gracious during NY Fashion week when things don't go according to plan.  For these French publishers and tag-alongs who are adults to use  slap someone because they personally feel entitled to something is classless.  What's worse, they were proud of it and bragged to the press about their behavior.

I hope a judge informs them once and for all that entitlement and savagery are will never be in style.

Met Gala Red Carpet Trends - Manus X Machina Style

kurkova marchesa

Aaaand it's another year of the Met Gala (aka Fashion Prom). The celebrities were challenged once again by Anna Wintour and the Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibit theme, Manus X Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology.
The name sounds very sci-fi and futuristic. The exhibit itself (more on that later today) was a study in different types of embellishment and how they have been updated over the years with technology. The exhibit showed artificial flowers as a traditional Haute Couture embellishment. Naomi Watts bridged both the modern mirrored embroidery with fabric fleurs applique on her Burberry gown. Karolina Kurkova was elegant in her Marchesa gown of oversized blossoms. By the way, those blossoms light up.
alien fashion
Many were clearly under the impression that this was a science-fiction theme. Ex-Machina star Alicia Vikander looked like an adorable robot in her Louis Vuitton dress. Lady Gaga went with a chic alien in a Versace ensemble. Michelle Monaghan wore Rosie Assoulin. FKA Twigs wore Versace.
The museum exhibit was divided into different sections highlight an embellishment technique. These ladies paid tribute to each one. Alessandra Ambrosio honored the lace section by wearing a Balmain crochet gown. Solange Knowles did the pleated section proud in her yellow David Laport creation. Rita Ora represented the featherwork section of the museum perfectly in a sexy Vera Wang dress.

rita ora met gala
From casual observation, the winning designers of the night for sheer volume of celebrities seemed to be Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Balmain and custom H& M. For the winning designer of THE BEST LOOK OF THE 2016 MET GALA was hands down, Claire Dane's stunning ballgown by Zac Posen. It was breathtaking on its own. The perfect color on the actress, a gorgeous shape, but wait, when the lights went out, thousands of fiber optics made the gown glow, highlighting the construction beautifully. It was the ultimate combination of classic Haute Couture as made by hand and the technology nod of having the dress light up. Bravo Zac Posen! Until next year folks.

Oscars Red Carpet - Life Imitating Art

brie larson oscars
My Oscars Red Carpet recap this time highlights the best looks that evoke iconic fashions from favourite paintings and films. Taraji P. Henson and Brie Larson both wore stunning sculpted black gowns that had the sexy appeal of John Singer Sargent's famous painting of Madame X. Henson wore a velvet Alberta Ferretti gown. Brie Larson channelled Charles James in an Oscar de la Renta gown.
leslie mann zac posen

If there is anyone that can make a grown Hollywood actress feel like a Disney princess, it is designer Zac Posen. Some of the most memorable big ballgowns at previous award shows and the Met Gala have been made by him. Here, he created the enchanting yellow ballgown for Leslie Mann that Beauty and the Beast's Belle would be proud of. Wait, does that make Hubby Judd Apatow the Beast?

janelle monae elie saab

This has to be my favourite gown of the night. Janelle Monae is positively regal in this gorgeously embellished Elie Saab gown. The twinkling jewels on the black organza emulate the stars and space she represented in the Oscar-nominated movie Hidden Figures. The silhouette evokes a queen of an earlier era, specifically, Marie Antoinette in the 1938 film version of her life. The paniers on Norma Shearer's hips are more exaggerated, but both gowns feature intricate metallic embroidery and command whatever room the wearer walks into.

So there you go. These were my favourite Oscars Red Carpet looks that imitated the most iconic fashion looks from art. What were your favourite Academy Awards looks from last night?

High Fashion Hits the Tony Awards Red Carpet 2015

vanessa hudgens tony awards

fashion designers tony awards

Did anyone else think last night's TONY Awards red carpet looked like an extension of the CFDA Awards? That was not a coincidence. In the past, the awards ceremony celebrating live theater was barely watched by television fans. Unlike the Academy Awards, it was not the destination for celebrity fashion inspiration.

Legendary costume designer for Broadway, William Ivey Long (hell, even my Hubby knows his work) reached out to Anna Wintour for help with all of the above. Together with Vogue staff and the team at PR company KCD Worldwide, they made sure to give the stars lots of styling and designer help for the evening.

Like your typical Anna Wintour fest, many fashion designers attended with a celebrity as their date. Bernadette Peters arrived with Zac Posen; Joseph Altuzarra escorted Vanessa Axente, and Francisco Costa had Kendall Jenner on his arm representing Calvin Klein.

kiesza altuzarra

Some of my favorites on the red carpet were slightly biased because I am a big fan of performer's talent and performances first. Just off of Mad Men and nominated for The Heidi Chronicles, Elisabeth Moss wore a flower embroidered Oscar de la Renta column dress. Vanessa Hudgens, who starred in Gigi on Broadway, wore a beautiful floral print gown by Naeem Khan.

Kelli O'Hara, whom I loved way back in her Jekyll & Hyde days was the big winner last night for Best Actress in a Musial. She also wore a gold Oscar de la Renta dress. Jennifer Lopez wore Valentino, Canadian singer Kiesza wore a stunning if unconventional dress from Aluzarra. One of my favorite actresses on Broadway (Wicked) and tv (Pushing Daisies) Kristen Chenoweth hosted the Awards in a slinky silver, Zac Posen.

Congratulations to all of the talent, both dramatic and sartorial this week. Bravo for making the Great White Way the great red way with amped up TONY Awards red carpet fashion.

Top Ten Websites for Indie Fashion Designers

Designers! Whether you are a fashion fan looking to jump in, or a veteran of the industry, starting your own indie fashion venture is intimidating.  Luckily, the internet has great resources for fashion entrepreneurs of every level.  Here are my top ten websites for start-up fashion:

Reference/Sourcing:
Looking to produce locally?  I was just introduced to Maker’s Row.  It is a beautifully designed site that vets domestic factories for clothing and accessories.

Fashiondex has been around for awhile.  The site isn't fancy, but lists lots of suppliers to cut the legwork down for everything from trims, fabric, contractors and publications.

Startup Fashion is a great site for looking up industry terminology, retailers and articles for design entrepreneurs.

Opportunities:
The Emerging Designer has fantastic articles on doing business, design competitions or other opportunities to be seen and purchased.

Handbag Designer 101 is for all of you accessories designers.  It runs conferences, lists jobs and services and hosts an annual design competition that has jump started many a successful label.

GenArt.org has been around for years and they aim to promote and showcase creative from art, film and fashion.  Alumni include everyone from Zac Posen to Rodarte.

Inspiration:
WGSN is a paid subscription site, and if you work for a larger firm, you might get access.  Otherwise, try for their student or group subscriptions, or follow their blog.  They have amazing reports on color, retail display, patterns, product categories, packaging, everything you can think of.  Highly addictive.

If you don’t already know Pinterest , you shouldn’t be in this biz at all… Target your image searches for specific inspiration and follow your heroes.  It is also good for getting feedback on your own work or attracting new sales.

Marketing and PR:
PR Couture is a wonderfully comprehensive site for learning about the do’s and don’ts of PR that apply specifically to fashion creatives.  Learn etiquette, case studies, tips and great resources from Crosby Noricks, one of the best in the biz.

Design Sponge is one of my favorite sites for overall design, but their Biz Ladies column is one of the most helpful I have come across for creative people learning the nitty gritty of business.  (Legal? Taxes? E-commerce and SEO marketing?) The language is written from successful design entrepreneurs who have already learned their lessons and can explain their advice in words we get.

Good luck, and onto fame and fortune everyone!

Charles James, Beyond Fashion

charles james clover gown
charles james dress
What makes Charles James the most respected technician and designer of fashion?  The Metropolitan Museum of Art aims to explain this with their new exhibit, Charles James, Beyond Fashion.

While non-fashion fans may not be aware of his name and work as much as mega-brands like Chanel or Prada, anyone in the design field has probably studied his creations as a master class.  You may have heard clothing being described as "architectural" and missed the connection.  Looking at a Charles James dress, this is where you finally understand how a garment can resemble a scientifically constructed building.

The designer is most famous for his clover gowns created for special clients in his 40 year career, having first debuted in 1953.  The signature look is the way that the skirt drapes into a shape resembling a four-leaf clover.  For those of you who have never draped a soft, delicate, two dimensional fabric to cover a three-dimensional body, it might be impossible to understand what a feat of engineering this is.  As a fashion student, the legend was that these gowns were so impeccably constructed, they stood up on their own.

met fashion charles james

While I have seen many of these pieces in previous exhibits over the past 20 years, what was impressive to me about this show was the high-tech tools used to educate the viewer on the genius of Charles James.  There were large screens programmed next to each gown on the first floor gallery.  The screens displayed intricate 3D animations of each layer and pattern piece that went into each dress.
You might see each layer of horsehair, satin, lace, tulle and what their flat piece looked like (much like a Roschach test) and how it was draped and sewn into place to create the fully dimensional garment.  Robotic arms highlighted each area on the gown represented by the screen.  On the yellow satin lace gown (top photo) lace inserts were even lit from within to demonstrate its sheerness.  It also showed that in addition to the masterful shape of the lace on that skirt, there were hand-cut and stitched lace motifs added on top of the gown to give a more artistic layout and texture.

While the creativity or style sense of Charles James was undisputed. He saw himself as a problem solver and teacher.  The scrapbooks and studio part of the exhibit indicated he analyzed more effective ways to fit the human body, attempting to re-invent the modern dress form.

He was passionate about construction, innovative seaming, circle-cut gowns.  Many of his looks are iconic and never duplicated.  Some of his biomorphic designs were well ahead of their time, influencing other designers like Christian Dior, Zac Posen and Alexander McQueen.

Make sure to catch Charles James, Beyond Fashion at the Metropolitan Museum of Art before August 10, 2014.

Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute Gala 2011

The stars poured out from Maybachs, black Cadillacs, and even a Prius in what seemed like the biggest celebrity event in recent memory to honor the late Alexander McQueen.

It was Alexander McQueen’s legacy that triumphed this weekend. First was the house’s dress via Sarah Burton for the future queen, Kate Middleton, for the wedding of the century. Then it was staging of the extravagant and one of the most extensive costume exhibits we have ever seen at his soon to be open exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum’s Savage Beauty exhibit starting on May 4.  The Fab Team was privy to an early press preview and have already vowed to return again now that it is open to the public.

And to top of the McQueen legacy, the Met’s annual fete, the Costume Institute Gala was in honor of the Savage Love exhibit and a celebration of a brilliant life.
The entry stairs of the Met museum were covered with red carpet when we arrived and young, handsome men dressed in traditional Scottish kilts stood at the entrance to greet the celebrity guests.

Ladies who truly defined ‘supermodel’ like Naomi Campbell, Giselle and Iman looked stunning in dresses (Iman wore a gold pants/top) that were couture worthy which was in keeping with the spirit of Alexander McQueen.  Models of the moment, Doutzen Kroes, dwarfed the red carpet with her massive flowing red dress with endless train.

Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Extravaganza

Forget Fashion Week.  Victoria's Secret has absolutely no intention of playing with the rest of the industry.  Their big presentation is for the purpose of pure spectacle and Wednesday night, they proved they do it best.

The check-in was reportedly tougher than going through U.S. Customs with a ticking suitcase.  The guest list was a who's who of multiple celebrity disciplines...Movie stars like Gerard Butler and Malin Ackerman. Chef Daniel Boulud and athlete Serena Williams made their appearance as well. The music industry contingent was represented by Maroon 5.  The fashion industry elite, like Alexander Wang and Zac Posen were the rare males in the room who were actually there to look at the clothing.

The show itself was an over-the-top glitterfest.  The runway sparkled with gold, with shiny metallic props that looked like they came from Jeff Koon's garage.  The famous 'angel wings' were bigger and better than ever.  They seemed to be inspired by tough tattoo babes and preening peacocks.  The lingerie pieces are generally not the same outfits you would find at the mall.  However toned down versions of the novelty pieced corsets, wired and cleavage-hoisting lace bras and embellished panties will be on the racks soon.  Katy Perry and Akon serenaded the crowd with fantastic performances.

Which angel was your favorite?

#NYFW Spring 2016 Designer Inspiration

What are we in store for this NY Fashion Week? I will inevitably have shoulder and foot pain from rushing between the new venues with my camera equipment, but you don't need to hear that. The fashion designers created their collection around a wide range of inspirations this season. Some designers showed their fashion illustrations to express their direction. Other designers put together mood boards of their muses. A few designers let a very specific detail guide them in their season.

Daniel Silverstain cited the Exposition of 1967 in Montreal, Canada as his inspiration for spring. It seems ultra-specific or baffling. Based on the sketches, it looks like it the Expo67 inspiration was in the color palette of sporty colors.

Nicholas K. cited "free fall" as his direction, shown in the downward drape of his look. Son Jung Wan had an aquarian theme, specifically the Jeju Island of her home country of Korea. Mathieu Mirano's ombre sketch was a part of his "mega-morpher" muse. Tome's muse is Fiona Hall. The fabrics and colors reflect the ecological issues the activist was passionate about.

A Moi has textured fabric and retro glamour photos on the mood board. Zac Posen's collection looks like it will be very constructed based on the corset photograph. His theme was "Maximal Minimialism" which indicates a study in contrasts. Sandhya Garge put together richly colored and patterned mood board about the city of Jaipur. Think spices, palaces, prints and colors. Tanya Taylor loved the textures of cultures. Rita Vinieris studied the effect of light travelling through darkness for spring 2016. Zimmerman put together their mood board around vintage fashions of the 1800s inspired by the book "7 Little Australians".

Idan Cohen is promoting sunsets and seashells in his collection. Reem Acra is working her magic with Arabian Nights. Creatures of theWind focused on beaded appliques in nature motifs for their "Eclipse" theme. Zang Toi, who often designs his collection around a beautiful location has chosen the island of Santorini this season.

Hundreds of designers are showing around the city for NY Fashion Week. Based on everyone's different muses, it's clear that no two collections could ever be alike. Fashion is as diverse as the people who make it.

Textile Design: Digital Printing vs. Old School

The fashion crowd has traditionally been criticized for their slow embrace of technology. Old masters deplore the loss of hand-drawn sketches, couture sewing techniques and artisan craftsmanship in today's mass market world.
Where does textile design fit into this debate? The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article on high end designers who have incorporated the use of digital fabric printing into their collections. Zac Posen and Helmut Lang were able to translate photographic images into dresses. Recent technology has allowed for sharper, crisper images that were not possible in the years before.
Theia designer Don O'Neill took advantage of the speed of this tool by combining the new and the old. He translated an original piece of art into a custom digital print fabric in time to be worn by Carrie Underwood for an awards night.
Does this technology take away from those who still illustrate patterns by hand and use silk screening as a couture art form? Not according to Catherine Malandrino, who vows to continue employing artists specifically for this purpose.

In my own experience of design, there is no technology that replaces hand appliques and embroidery as a technique.
The most recent season of Project Runway, designers worked with Vivienne Tam to create a digitally printed fabric. This is also the show where the talent is asked to create each outfit by hand and employ Haute Couture skills for the runway. It's about making finding new mediums to express creativity.
What is your favorite medium for design? Does digital open up new possibilities? Need to explore it more? Craftzine has a great guide to break it down.

Best of Emmy's Red Carpet - The Angels

The most talented actresses of the small screen were celebrated at the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.  The hottest trend on the red carpet? Bright glittering angels in platinum and white.

As a curvy girl myself, I love seeing gowns that sculpt and highlight great curves in an unusual way.  Kate Mara's J. Mendel gown had multi-directional shirring along with shaped, semi-sheer layers to reveal the leg in a soft way.  Also loved the chunky beading on the top.  Sofia Vergara's hourglass figure is always epic on the red carpet.  Roberto Cavalli's gown not only hugged her body, but the silver embroidered lines traced each sexy shape even more.  Danielle Brooks of Orange is the New Black wore a Nathaniel Paul gown with a great circle lace bodice.  It contrasted beautifully against her skin.  The asymmetrical skirt with high leg slit was incredibly flattering.

I loved these shimmering dresses.  Amy Poehler was stunning in THEIA's silver beaded gown.  Hayden Pannetiere made every Mom I know jealous in a starburst embroidered gown by Lorena Sarbu.  Taylor Schilling's halter gown had beautiful beaded lines by Zuhair Murad.

Lucy Liu's gown from Zac Posen pulled shirring details in several directions to frame her body.  Julianna Hough's strapless dress was a contemporary take on the retro big bow dress by DSquared.  Dascha Polanco was in full diva mode in a ballgown by Johanna Johnson.

Ten Ways to Green Your Closet

Earth Day is coming up on Sunday.  It started in 1970 during a time of anti-war sentiment and concerns about the environment.  Sad to say, those concerns are just as prominent today as they were back then.

Historically, the environment hasn’t been a priority among the fashion set.  The luxury industry is forever linked to conspicuous consumption.   That said, designers today are becoming more eco-conscious.  Zac Posen, Lauren Bush, Derek Lam and Behnaz Sarafpour among others gathered in Manhattan to support Clean By Design, an initiative with the Council of Fashion Designers of America with Vogue Magazine that aims to reduce the negative impact fashion has on the environment.  The initiative wants to educate fashion designers.

The current state of pollution was a major inspiration in the designs at Qinghai Design School’s graduating class for Shanghai Fashion Week.  Outfits included turtlenecks that converted into facial protection and color coordinated face masks.

So what can YOU do to green your own wardrobe?

1)  Be a locavore.  Buying food from local sources has gained momentum in recent years.  Apply the same principles to clothes.  Support designers like Nanette Lepore who manufacture domestically, which provides employment to the local economy or designers from your home town.  Items that don’t need to be shipped via boat or plane obviously have a smaller carbon footprint.

2    2) Buy vintage.  Tailoring, construction and design details rocked in decades past.  Television shows like Mad Men have made wardrobes the real star.  Buy the real thing from great vintage shops or find a bargain at reputable thrift stores like Salvation Army.  Believe or not, they are a stylist’s secret weapon and actually partner with a lot of high fashion sources to manage their chic offerings.

3   3)    Recycle to upcycle. If you find that great vintage or thrift find, perfect.  If not, get creative and transform a castoff into something fabulous.  Need ideas? Great sites like Threadbanger  have a lot of DIY instructions.  Not crafty? Seek out designers who do it for you.  BabySteinberg out of Canada transforms garbage into couture creations.  Designer  Christopher Raeburn  updates older pieces for the modern hipster.

     4) Style swap.  Broke?  Clothing swaps around the country are a hit.  Find your fashion soulmate and trade your favorites for new favorites.  Find some in your hometown with swap groups on Meetup.com.

5      5)     Eco-friendly fabrics. Clothing made from green materials aren't the granola, harsh fabrics of the early days.  Bamboo knits come in amazing color palettes and are super soft.  Hemp silk bridal gowns have a luxurious look and texture.  Warm fleece made from discarded water bottles help reduce a bit of the landfills.  Lyocell, tencel and other new plant-based fabrics are gaining popularity.  Technology is constantly bringing new materials to the industry as well.  Learn more about these at Ecouterre.com.

5   6) Planet-friendly accessories.  There are a huge range of accessories that can be made from eco-friendly materials that might not work in clothing.  Nahui Ollin’s bags made from candy wrappers have been seen on the arms of hipsters, television stars and fashion icons.  Vegetable tagua is a great alternative to make beads.  Craft fairs are full of jewelry made from everything from soda can tabs, vintage book covers to scarves felted from old clothing.  The handbag design competitionawards top prizes to Best Green Handbag and Best Socially Responsible Handbags, proving that style with a conscious can also be super-chic.

     7) Pass on packaging.  I know part of the thrill of the shopping experience is the tissue paper, glossy bag and pretty box.  Truthfully, the pleasure of that only lasts a few seconds.  Packaging costs a lot of money to produce and has been factored in to the cost of your item.  Taking your goods home in your fabulous handbag is more glamorous and creates a lot less garbage.

     8)     Multi-task your items.  Put your stylist skills to use.  Find items that can be worn in different ways…Imagine a dress that can be worn as a top, cardigan, tunic and skirt, then folds into a bag.  Look for convertible garments that are designed to be worn different ways so you have several styles to choose from.  We like the 5 in 1 dress from Thieves Boutique. This also makes packing for a trip a breeze!

9   9) Buy better, not more.  Invest in better pieces.  Having a ton of cheap, crappy clothes doesn't impress anyone.  What’s more, cheaply made mass market duds are more likely to be made at factories with less standards for the environment, worker safety and quality.

1. 10)   Support good companies.  Research and buy goods from companies that you know to have good practices.  Eileen Fisher  produces a pretty Eco collection with their own employees as models.  At their headquarters, they practice every day polices like a central garbage disposal for the floor that encourages employees to produce less waste if they have to travel to get rid of it.

Happy Earth Day!
