#NationalBookDay 7 Books For Aspiring Fashion Designers

books fashion designing
Happy National Book Day! These are the books I have found to be essential in your fashion library. Whether you are a newbie fashion designer, fashion school graduate or considering becoming a fashion designer, these are the books to inspire your creativity and upgrade your skills.

"Reader's Digest" Complete Guide to Sewing: This book has all the basic skills and directions for almost any sewing skill you need to create samples for your first collection. The copy I had was an earlier version of this one. This edition is updated with better graphics and handy as ever. You can't be a fashion designer if you don't know how to build an actual collection.

Drape Drape and its sister series Pattern Magic were originally published in Japanese, now available in English. If you mastered basic sewing skills, these books offer a deep dive into creative silhouettes for the true designer.

If You Have to Cry, Go Outside: And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You is written by PR maven Kelly Cutrone of People's Revolution, a top firm in the industry for many years. You might also remember this agency from reality shows The Hills and Kell on Earth. The book offers tough love and blunt talk about taking responsibility for yourself in the fashion industry.

Confessions of a Window Dresser is written by Barney's creative director Simon Doonan. He has written a bunch of memoirs, but this was his first and my favorite. His wit and colorful accounts of characters and fashion remind me of the passion you have for what you do when all else seems ridiculous.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty  I own a ton of fashion and art books for inspiration. It's my weakness. If I had to choose one, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's tome from the Alexander McQueen exhibit is my favorite. The fashion is already breathtaking, but the photography and art direction only enhances it.

The Fashion Designer Survival Guide, Revised and Expanded Edition: Start and Run Your Own Fashion Business If you ever needed a textbook for everything school didn't teach you, this would be it. The original edition was written by Mary Gelhar, a fairy Godmother of sorts behind the Gen Art organization that launched the careers of many a hot designer in the 1990s and 2000s. The updated edition has current production sources, advice from top designers and guidance for producing a business plan and fashion show.

Happy #NationalBookDay and get your fashion design careers going!

Indie Designer Pitch Night at This Is Story

bloomsburysq bath
rachel schechtman adam glassman

Entrepreneurs showed their stuff earlier this week in hopes of being a part of NYC's most interesting retail project. Creators pitched STORY  founder Rachel Schechtman and Oprah Magazine's Creative Director Adam Glassman.  The boutique in Chelsea takes the "Point of view of a Magazine, Changes like a Gallery, Sells things like a Store".

The store is an ever-evolving concept around a central theme or story. Right now, its "HER" story, focusing on women, a DressBar collection, groupings of merchandise curated by prominent women. Previous stories included themes of Love, Home for the Holidays, Style, Tech and Wellness. During the theme, there are related events with prominent speakers, workshops and socials,

Pitch Night at Story is for Makers to be Discovered and Network

I learned about STORY's famous Pitch Night at Martha Stewart's American Made conference. This is a night for entrepreneurs, creators, makers to pitch Schechtman and guests of honor (previous judges included Whoopi Goldberg). Each business owner has exactly three minutes to tell their story and present their product.

Weng Meng Design
I write about opportunities for my fellow designers. I figured it was time for me to put my own skills to use and pitch myself. I pitched my designer's pin-cushion ring I created for my fellow sewers. I also pitched my hand-beaded belts, jewelry and handbags from my Weng Meng Design label.

My time with Adam Glassman and Rachel Schechtman was not a formal 3-minute presentation. It was more of a conversation. I loved how enthusiastic and engaged each of them were in what I presented. They could make the most nervous artist comfortable.

The other purpose of Pitch Night was so that the creators and entrepreneurs could gather and network with each other while they waited for their turn to present. Collaborations had been formed, new professional relationships formed among the social atmosphere (and beer and snacks) provided by STORY.

I enjoyed speaking to Niambi Caccioli, founder of Bloomsbury Sq. who produces preservative-free bath products from New Jersey. I am enjoying the refreshing scent of the workout afterglow spray as I write this. I also met jewelry designer Dana Phillips who infuses Reiki energy into each of her Tulaa Jewelry designs.

So are you ready to tell your story? Is your collection ready to be seen by the most influential retailers and editors out in the industry? Get on STORY's e-mail list to pitch or discover their next theme.

5 Things We Learned at Martha Stewart's American Made 2014

blake lively martha stewart
Are you a creative entrepreneur? Martha Stewart’s AmericanMade 2014 summit was a meeting of the best.  Whether you are a designer, writer, crafter, artist, if you planned to make your passion your living, this was the conference for you.

This summit didn’t specialize in specific skills but provided valuable inspiration for people at the top of their game in different disciplines. What I loved the most was hearing from creative people who built businesses against the odds and thrived.

What were the most useful things we learned at Martha Stewart's American Made Summit?

1. Make Your Product Meaningful

Carolyn Rafaelian, founder of jewelry brand Alex and Ani learned this after the initial success of a few styles, only for them to drop off near the holidays.  She learned at this time of year, people want to see meaningful things for the holidays.  For her, this ended up translating to incorporating inspiring symbols or elevating motifs into her jewelry.

2. Only Work with People You Like

Most of the entrepreneurs echoed this sentiment throughout the day. To succeed as a creative, one must work very hard, be patient and you could be made or broken by the team you choose. As your venture is your passion, the people that work with you should understand that and feel the same way. Know who you are and what your brand means and get to know who your partners are and what they stand for.

Blake Lively, who looked glowingly beautiful with her baby bump and flower appliqued white dress was there to represent her venture, Preserve. Even at her level of celebrity, the people who she chose to collaborate with her were her family. Her brother shot the photos for her site, she polls hubby Ryan Reynolds and other family members for their merchandise reviews. She talked about her holiday rituals of how her family painstakingly wrapped presents that they were never opened until after the New Year. No matter what level of success or failure, it’s the ones you love that propel you forward.

3. Tell a story.

Rachel Shechtman founded her boutique, Story on the concept of retail media.  She curates her merchandise in a similar process as a magazine might, crafting shopping concepts around a story.

All of the award winners had a great journey behind their company. Pashon Murray, founder of Detroit Dirt built a business providing dirt for farming from city trash. Ellen Bennett designed and made high-quality custom aprons for restaurants after her frustration as a kitchen worker.  Amy Peterson founded her jewelry company, Rebel Nell to empower and educate women in shelters to support themselves. These women were trained in making their signature jewelry inspired by graffiti of Detroit.

As an independent brand, whether you’re selling a product or yourself needs a killer pitch and story to tell. That’s what your customers, buyers and clients connect with.

4. Success most often comes  on the heels of failure

Almost every panelist discussed moments of failure.  It is how we strategize and move forward that counts.  Barbara Corcoran discussed being offered the job for television's Shark Tank after a particularly disastrous financial year, only to find out that someone else was hired when she accepted.  She also mentioned building her business after her original partner (life and business) left her to marry a woman half her age.  Peter McGuiness, the Chief Brand officer of Chobani yogurt laid out the business plan of the founder after he was told that his concept for Greek yogurt would never work because of taste, teeny market share and his lack of English skills.

5. Super successful women give zero f**ks about being nice.

The most popular panel was the “Ask the Experts” panel that was hosted by Charlotte Beers, former CEO of Ogilvy and featured Martha Stewart, Barbara Corcoran, Tim Davis, president of UPS and David Bobbitt, the executive director of the SCORE foundation

In the intro, Ms. Beers described Barbara Corcoran as a 12-year old boy who probably sleeps in a coffin  Barbara Corcoran said Martha Stewart was full of sh*t and the second bitch who screwed her over.  This was all done in good fun, to the happy amusement of the audience. These women had a comfort level having all reached a stratospheric level of success. While the men on the panel seemed intimidated, the women were clearly comfortable and confident in their own achievements. At this level of success, they did not waste effort analyzing how to seem “likable”, they were direct, efficient and lit a fire under the would be entrepreneurs just for being there.

So there you have it. Do you have the passion and patience to build your brand into a success? It doesn’t matter if you are an artist, make crafts that there isn’t an established market for or selling a service no one knew they needed. With the right strategy and hard work, there is a dream to be lived for everyone.

Of course, if television fame is as important as fashion fortune to you, the Project Runway Casting is for you.  If you know of the show at all, you know what they are looking for.  Great design (and execution!) skills and big personalities.  Winners get to show at NY Fashion Week and $100K to make their collection happen.  Apply by April 14, 2014.

How to Become a Stylist - Secrets from the Stars

An all-star panel of celebrity stylists spoke at the Museum at FIT last night.  Moderated by Valerie Steele, the group brought June Ambrose, Mary Alice Stephenson, Freddie Leiba, Kathryn Neale and Irene Albright together to discuss the craft of being stylist.

Do you think this is a glamorous profession?  June Ambrose had her own reality show and is famous for transforming grungy hip hop artists to fashion role models.  Mary Alice Stephenson’s dream closet gets almost as much press as her work with CNN, E! and Harper’s Bazaar.  Irene Albright has created the looks for characters of many of your favorite movies and now the curator of the Albright fashionlibrary.  Freddie Leiba and Kathryn Neale have received accolades throughout their careers for dressing the stars in magazines, red carpet and onscreen.

Glamour? When host Valerie Steele asked the panel to define what being a stylist is, the answers ranged from babysitter, therapist, butler to ringmaster.

Freddie said his stylist beginnings involved picking up pins.  Irene said she spent the first 6 months doing nothing but return clothes.  June Ambrose started in this industry as a costume maker because she initially did not have the influence to convince designers to lend her clothes.  Mary Alice Stephenson stressed the importance of paying your dues; getting an internship and making sure your dream boss understand how you can make their life easier.

Being a stylist is such a broad title in the fashion industry.  The panel defined the differences in dressing a celebrity for a red carpet, actors for a movie, a fashion spread in a magazine.  June explained that styling a celebrity for a public appearance is about building their personal brand.  Mary Alice explained that all stylists are very protective of their clients as they are entrusted with their most intimate details and play therapist to making them look and feel their best.

An editorial spread in a magazine, the models you dress are hired to execute your vision, as opposed to the celebrity promoting themselves.  Freddie Leiba described it as the photographer is the conductor of the orchestra and the stylist is there to play and serve the composition.
Irene Albright described dressing actors in a movie as part of creating the character themselves.  Every piece should serve some aspect to who the character or person is in the film.

Many of the fans of this panel were here because they had hopes of becoming a designer or stylist themselves.  The panel made very clear that it takes a lot of 18 hour days, frustration and rejection, then perseverance just to survive in this business.  They were also very supportive, suggesting helpful tips like making yourself available in any free time you have, trading your volunteer services for access to learning, sending direct messages and being yourself.

The best advice I heard to a budding stylist was Mary Alice Stephenson’s invitation to help out her wonderful Glam For Good organization.  She spoke of an upcoming event at the end of May where underprivileged ladies would get the opportunity to be dressed for the upcoming Met Gala where she could help out.  Bringing style and glamour to better the world? Genius.

The Passion For Fashion

mariana leung design
It is the first official day of New York Fashion Week.  I won’t count on getting much sleep and diving into an onslaught of runway show after runway show.  I will spend most of it trekking from venue to venue dragging my gear with me.  I will likely be stepped on, kicked, condescended to, sneered at or ignored.  Why? I love fashion.

If you work in the fashion industry as long as I have, you understand that you are subjecting yourself to backstabbing, long hours and low pay compared to the cushy career paths of your non-“Garmento” friends.  The only reason to put up with this is because you truly believe in the beauty of fashion.

I attempted to make little garments for my stuffed animals in grade school.  Ironically, I was not allowed to own a Barbie doll because my mother did not want me growing up to be obsessed with shallow endeavors like clothes and make-up.  #FAIL.

In high school, I started my own accessories line using origami and jewelry.  Attending the fledgling trade show at the Toronto Convention Center that served as the city’s only fashion week at the time cemented my passion for the industry.  I knew I wanted to create or share the beautiful work that went into the great design.

At Parsons School of Design, I created dresses that had a sense of humor or worked in an artisanal craft.  I loved dressing models backstage at Bryant Park for Isaac Mizrahi, or showing off the Carmen Marc Valvo collection to buyers in his showroom.

Now I consult with my favorite designers or new start-ups to help bring their collection inspiration to the stores as a textile or technical designer.  As a blogger and photographer, I have the joy of shooting my favorite collections from the front row and helping others appreciate the work that went into them!

Confucius was quoted along the lines of “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”   I disagree.  Anyone who loves fashion, works their ass off and will always do so.

Do you work in fashion?  What fuels your love of style?

FAB Exclusive: Interview with NBC Fashion Star Cassandra Hobbins

fashion star cassandra hobbins

I first met Cassandra Hobbins working on a cute sportswear collection called Priorities.  She made it look great, and as a technical design director, I made it fit.  A few years later, I saw her design and sell her way through to first runner-up on NBC’s Fashion Star.  Mentored by menswear icon John Varvatos, her chic aesthetic and designs made her a judge and fan favorite.

What many people don’t know is that Cassandra started her career in psychology in Canada.  She soon found her calling in fashion and found an internship at a menswear company on the West Coast.  A shoe company discovered her talents and flew her to New York to run operations.  Soon, she was hired as a senior designer for many top labels.

Cassandra sat down with Ms. Fabulous editor Mariana Leung to chat about her working style and upcoming plans:

Ms. Fabulous: Prior to the show, you had a fast trajectory when you first started out in as an intern in menswear on the West Coast, then flying out to NYC when you were hired to head up operations for a shoe label. Soon, your work led to a prestigious position as head designer at Elie Tahari.  What specific things do you think you did differently from your peers that led to your quick advancement?

Cassandra Hobbins: Well, I am still not as far along as I want to be! However, I am doing pretty well considering I am self-taught and didn't go to school for fashion design. I always felt really fortunate to be given the opportunity at Orthodox to pretty much learn as I went along and run a company for someone despite having no previous experience. So, I just poured all my time, energy, effort, and passion into that first position and worked my way up very fast. That is the beauty of working at a small start-up - you get to wear many hats, learn all roles, how they function together, and move up the ladder faster, with a well-rounded set of skills under your belt, as well as having to become a manager of any new people who come on board.

For me, I always go into every job thinking this may start out as one thing, but I am going to make sure I go above and beyond to make it even more. I'd accept a job as a janitor somewhere if I saw opportunity to turn that janitor position into CEO.  I am a sponge, love to learn, love to have fun, love my job so much and work very hard - It's good to know that  there are employers out there that will actually reward you on those merits alone, even in this cut throat industry.

Ms. F: It was a big risk leaving an established position at Tahari for a shot to compete on television.  What were the pros and cons you had to weigh in making that decision?  Would you advise someone else to follow in your path?

CH:  Leaving Tahari was the easiest decision I've ever made, there was absolutely nothing on the "cons" side to leaving Tahari. The pro's side to leaving Tahari was about 7 pages long,  I'll leave it at that .... haha.

Ms. F: What was the typical process week to week in designing for each challenge on Fashion Star?  How many hours and how many people did you work with?

CH: We were given the challenge let's say on a Monday at 10 am. The garments then had to be completed by 10 pm the next day. So about a day and a half once you throw in all the fabric shopping, meetings, making a tv show stuff.  We had a pattern maker to work with. There was a sewing and cutting room that was assigned / communal at crunch time.
fashion star john varvatos

Ms. F: Your mentor on the show was John Varvatos.  What was the most valuable thing you learned from him and other mentors you have had in the past?

CH: John Varvatos was amazing. He was always very supportive of me even in times when everyone didn't understand why.  I definitely learned the importance of having confidence from him - a thing I often lack because I don't want people to think I am being arrogant or delusional about myself.

I have had the extreme fortune of having several mentors in life , the most important one being Jon Levine in Los Angeles, who owns a consulting firm called Apparel Advisors . He has consulted Wild Fox, Rock N Republic, has several brands himself , was COO of James Perse - he taught me the importance of everyone and everything being transparent in the structure of your company. You can't keep everything in your own head and at some point you need to delegate because trying to do everything will only hurt you and the growth of the business.  Doing "the most" work doesn't define your worth at a company, it's the quality of your work that does.

Ms. F: What are you working on now after the show has ended? Where can fans find your work?

CH: I am working at a company called Jump Apparel.  I am doing a dress line there , my first season for the brand being Spring 2014. I am excited to be working under the creative director of Isaac Mizrahi (which is one of approximately 20  brands under the companies umbrella) . I am also hoping to launch a line under my own brand name that will be an extension of the styles I did for Express and Macy's on the show.

I am also in talks to do some guest writing for an amazing Canadian fashion magazine called, Niche Magazine.

Finally, I am also honored to be part of an amazing project created by a great friend and former colleague of my first brand Prose IV , Casey Cleveland. It's a fashion lifestyle project targeting the Health and Medical industry that will work to provide healthcare services to the under privileged through the sales of the product. We are expecting to launch later this year. In the meantime you can follow us at S.A.L.T on social media with the handle "saveanotherlifetoday" - on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest.....

Ms. F: For designers hoping to compete on the next season, what tips can you give for being cast and the actual competition?

CH: I really hope there will be a next season! The Friday night time slot this year was hard, so I hope they come back with season 3 and on a different night. People need to know that this format for designing product is literally how fast designing works in the fashion industry. We have serious time constraints to pump out tons of product with the help of a manufacturing team.

If in fact, the show does come back next year, I would tell the cast members to enjoy the process of making a TV show.  Interact with your other cast mates, have fun, and get to know all the production crew and people who make the show happen. If you are working as a designer, you will likely always be a designer, but this may be the only time in your life you get to film a TV show so make the best of it and don't take yourself so seriously (the public will do that for you, haha!)

Ms. F: Thanks Cassandra and good luck!
