Style Icon: Frida Kahlo

frida kahlo nikolas muray

I just came back from visiting the Art Gallery of Ontario's wonderful exhibit, Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics and Painting in Toronto.  The tagline was "He painted for the people. She painted to survive."  It was a multi-media exploration of their dramatic relationship and how their personal lives or politics affected their art.

While Diego Rivera was already a famous muralist, known for his political statements in his work when he met Frida Kahlo, she learned to come into her own as an artist as therapy for her extensive medical traumas.  Working through some of my own traumas in my personal life, I really connected with many of the self-portraits in the exhibit that depicted visual representations of her inner and physical pain.

What struck me from a style fashion standpoint was how important details like hairstyle, accessories and fashion were in the crafting of her personal in art and for the public.  In tribute to her ethnic background and politics, she adopted a style of dress that was inspired by her native Mexican and indigenous culture.  In photographs that were taken of Diego and her, or in portrait photos by other artists, she always had elaborate flower headdresses entwined in braids.  Her clothing was richly patterned and colorful.  In her self-portraits, she often depicted herself wearing huge necklaces, or elements of nature worn like a necklace.  There were paintings where she was framed in lace, evoking her religious beliefs.

While Frida’s style was not the fashion of her era, it amuses me to realize how contemporary her look is to our present time.  The style of flower headpieces she wore was listed as one of the top trends of 2012 according to Etsy.   I have seen countless photo editorials of flower crowns on blogs as well.  She rocked the statement necklace before it became a “thing”.  Elaborately braided hair was been the beauty blogger’s darling for the past 2 years.  While her eyebrow grooming didn't become a trend, embroidered blouses certainly were.

Frida inspired countless women to be brave, to express themselves and to love fiercely, and I salute her.

Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics and Painting is on exhibit until January 20, 2013.

Ivy Style at The Museum at FIT

preppy fashion
Feeling a little preppy?  Are plaids and tweeds the keystones of your wardrobe?  How did this evolve?  The Museum at FIT examines this American style in their exhibit, Ivy Style.  The preppy look had its roots, unsurprisingly, in academia.  Princeton university was one of the key Ivy League universities to initiate the trend.

Many of the iconic elements of preppy dressing came from athletics.  The white cable sweater tied around the shoulders was a tennis look.  Tweed? Saddle shoes? Polo coat? Equestrian sports.  The big contribution to modern dressing that is American sportswear really did come from sports.

Key brands that are iconic to the style are highlighted.  Not surprisingly, they would be labels like Ralph Lauren, Thom Browne, Chipp and Brooks Brothers.

The exhibition ends on January 5, 2013, so see it soon!

Joanna Mastroianni Spring 2013

This collection of hot house flowers, sexy cocktail dreses, blooming prints and bright colors was not for the shy girl.  Joanna Mastroianni's customer is not a woman who takes no for an answer and demands attention.

The sexiness factor might balance on the edge of taste if not worn well, bringing to mind successful trophy wives and clever mistresses.  If you have the attitude to flaunt it, these are the clothes to do it in.

I'm really glad this attractive collection was notable on its own merit, rather than the press generated by a front row guest passing away during a show a season earlier.

Merry Christmas

I just want to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas surrounded by the people you love.  I am lucky enough to be enjoying that privelage today, and I cannot think of a gift more special.  I had some unexpected bad news right before the holiday, and it is thanks to my family, husband and dear friends that I am ok.

You can never go wrong in treasuring the most important people in your life.

How to Dress Like Your Favorite Christmas Movie

This post is blatant holiday fluff.  No matter what holiday you celebrate in the winter, Christmas movies were part of your pop culture upbringing.  Here's how to bring a designer fashion touch to your favorite yuletide characters;
The Junya Watanabe Comme Des Garcons Fall 2012 collection was channeling our favorite blockhead this season with a red quilted jacket rugged pants and shoes.
Was Karl Lagerfeld inspired by vintage Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer's Abominable Snowman?  Hard to imagine, until you saw Fall 2010's Chanel fashion show mounted around huge icebergs, with models covered in head to toe fur...
Buddy the Elf as fashion icon?  Apparently DSquared2 thought so.  Here's their green coat with fur collar for Fall/Winter 2012.
Martin Short was a surprisingly dapper Jack Frost in 200's Santa Clause 3.  Prada's Fall 2012 Menswear collection brought the dandy out of many a man.

Doomsday Fashion - Mayan Costume and Textiles

guatemalan girls
Guatemala costume
Most of the world has misinterpreted the ancient Mayan calendar to read that December 21, 2012 was the end of the world.  If you are reading this, this clearly did not happen.  Where are the Mayans, and what do they wear?

I took a trip to Guatemala in college.  My family has visited the country several times since then.  We fell in love with the richly woven textiles and bright colors of the native people.  My father took the photos in this post.  He was actually able to find the little girl in the top photo again several years later in the same town square.

The classic women's garment for Mayans is the Huipil, a two-paneled blouse. They are often heavily embroidered or with brightly colored patterns woven in.  This blouse can be the a top or an over garment, often worn with a skirt. The skirt is also highly patterned.

For men, a typical outfit would consist of a shirt, pants and sash.  Collars might be embellished with hand-woven patterns or embroidery.  A wool tunic might act as outerwear.

Accessories? Shoulder bags are the handbag of choice for both men and women, often rectangular in shape. Sashes, headwraps, shawls, etc. are called Tzutes, an all-purpose utility cloth.

Did you learn something today?  I don't know about you, but the only people who were actually hoping today was their last was probably Jon Cusack who made the horrible 2012 movie.  Don't worry Jon, you'll still always be the cutie from Say Anything to me.

Kooey Swimwear 2013

The temperature dropped last night and I froze my fishnetted butt off.  Meanwhile, Down Under, it's high beach season in Australia.  Kooey Swimwear is a hot Australian label that showed its 2013 collection in Miami Fashion Week.  I thought this was the perfect (flimsy) excuse to show some scantily clad eye candy.

The collection had simple silhouettes.  There were classic bikini styles, very basic cover-ups, a few flattering one-piece suits.  Men's styles consisted only of solid color drawstring shorts or briefs.  The colors were bold however, and the women's pieces and pretty prints in tropical florals or a pebble print that looked like it was inspired by sportswear.  That's all there really was to say about it.  Judging by the expressions of enthusiasm of the models, I didn't miss anything backstage either.

Well, enjoy the skin show everyone.

How to Help Newtown, Connecticut

This post has absolutely nothing to do with style, or fashion, or holiday shopping.  Last Friday’s mass shooting of children, parents and teachers devastated everyone who heard about it.

As anyone who lives in the tri-state area of a certain age, it is very likely that you know someone directly that has been affected by this tragedy.  After the shock, your next instinct is to help any way you can.  Here are a few options based on how/what you can do:

Trauma, Grief Counseling, Dealing with Mental Illness:
Danbury Hospital is on the frontline for victims and also in working with different agencies to provide counseling for families.  You can help fund these initiatives here.
Save the Children is also available to help with their Help Children Cope with a Crisis initiative.  To help or donate, click here.

The Sandy Hook Elementary School Victims Relief Fund, organized by the PTA, was organized to provide grief counseling, pay for funeral expenses, create scholarships for students and fund a memorial.  To donate to the fund, follow here.

Additional resources can be found at ABC News’ round-up.

Support Organizations:
The United Way’s Western Connecticut branch could use your help volunteering or donations.

The Red Cross is always on hand at every crisis.  In Newton, they are providing food, water, emotional support and any other services they can in collaboration with local authorities.  To work with the Red Cross, connect here.

To volunteer with local organizations directly, you can call (800) 203-1234, according to the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection.

Families of the victims have organized funds in honor of their loved ones:
·         The family of Sandy Hook's principal, Dawn Hochsprung, created a memorial fund for the educator, who died trying to stop the gunman. Donations: Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung Memorial Fund, CT Teachers Credit Union, P.O. Box 2121, Waterbury, Conn. 06722.
·         The family of Olivia Engel, 6, created the Friends of the Engel Family Fund. On its Facebook page, a relative says the fund will be used to help the family financially. The family plans to meet this week to decide how to use the donations for a tribute or effort in Olivia's name that will have a more lasting impact.
·         The family of Emilie Parker, 6, created the Emilie Parker Fund  to raise donations to help her parents, Robbie and Alissa, take time off from work to be with their two younger children, and to help with funeral expenses and airfare to the family's home state of Utah, where they will have Emilie's funeral and bury her.
·         The family of Noah Pozner, 6, created Noah's Ark of Hope Fund to provide counseling, education and basic needs for his four siblings.

FAB Exclusive: Interview with Camila Alves

camila alves muxo handbags

You might recognize Camila Alves as the super-hot mom/model (her Hubby is the equally hot Matthew McConaughey).  These days Ms. Alves is gaining praise for her handbag label MUXO and a new tunic collection.  She truly puts family first, her design and business partner is none other than her own Mom.

In contrast to your typical "celebrity" handbag line, Camila and her mother originally started their own handbag line for same reasons as many other designers.  They wanted to make money together and be able to send funds home to their family.  In the early days, the two of them would work late into the night to stitch, hammer and apply trim themselves to make their bags by hand.

Ms. Fabulous editor Mariana Leung chats with Camila about her fashion journey:

Ms. FABulous: Who were your style icons growing up?

Camila Alves: I think my mother was definitely an influential part of my style growing up. She’s always had a cool sophisticated air about her that translates in our designs.

MsF: Has being a parent changed how you work as an entrepreneur and designer?

C.A.: Absolutely! I need things to not only be chic, but also effortless and able to be work for different outfits and occasions.

MsF: You design your handbag collection with your mother.  While you are well known for your modeling work in the fashion industry, did either of you have previous design experience or was it a mutual love of style that brought you together for this collection?

C.A.: I feel like I have been in the fashion my whole life! From my modeling career to watching my mother who has 3 degrees in design and arts!
MsF: The collection features Brazilian leather and handcrafted workmanship.  How involved were you in the decisions of choosing the materials and directing how they were to be made?

C.A.: I’m completely involved in the creative process. I wanted to create a line that I could nurture and grow be proud of, and that meant that I needed to be involved from conception to execution.

MsF: What inspired you to add tunics to your label?  Is there a plan for a full clothing line?

C.A.: I wanted to expand from the handbags and tunics worked naturally because just like the bags, it’s something that works for all women of different sizes and ages. No plans just yet, but we’ll see what else comes to mind!

MsF: What was the most unexpected thing you learned in creating your own fashion label?

C.A.: I was surprised at how easily something can come to life when you’re passionate about . And also how you actually influence people and provide them with special experiences thru your product and creation!

MsF: What is the most special tradition you have for the holidays?

C.A.: Getting the whole family together and having a sit down meal and acknowledging how blessed we are to have each other!

MsF: Thank you and happy holidays!

Closet Detox and $3000 Giveaway

I am a handbag freak.  Love them, I do.  However, I live in Manhattan, in a NYC-size apartment.  I can only fit so many pieces into my over-stuffed closet.  I have had to (tearfully) edit some out.  I have a Judith Leiber jeweled, satin clutch that I love, but unfortunately do not have an appropriate red carpet-worthy gown to wear with it.   I have a cool patent leather Kooba purse up for grabs too.

In the shoe department, you guys are really lucky... I have Burberry heels AND Prada Mary Janes that I have never worn.  Why?  Because I made the supreme mistake of buying them online on sale, and then procrastinating about trying them on until it was too late to return them.  Shame on me, goody for you.

Clothing-wise, I have everything from Tory Burch to Marc Jacobs, so please open some space in my closet so I can be allowed to go shopping again!

Now it’s YOUR turn! Detox your own closet and Hello La Mode will reward one closet with $3000 towards a new wardrobe.  We’re choosing one member on Hello La Mode who lists at least one new item for sale between now and January 30, 2012 to win $3000 in credit to shop the site for designer fashion.  500 other new listings will be rewarded $50 to shop the site.  It’s a win-win!

josie natori spring 2013
Josie Natori has had a great year. She celebrated her company's 40th anniversary with a beautiful book, a museum exhibit in her home country and a gorgeous tropical fantasy of a collection for spring 2013.

The color palette was bright, like the sunny colors of the beaches.  There were a lot of figure-flattering (and disguising) draping and gathers for soft silhouettes.  Her signature embroidered details were present in the white cotton sleepwear the designer showed.

For accessories, there were several beautiful fan-like handbags.  Shoes were bright and strappy.  I would love to be able to wear the fresh orchid hairpieces on the models, but they are not for sale and far too high maintenance!

DIY: Vintage Fur and Beaded Jacket Upgrade

jeweled collar jacket

Sometimes your favorite fashion item gets a little worn and you need to give it a holiday season upgrade.  I decided to give my inexpensive brocade jacket (originally on sale at Nine West) a luxury DIY makeover.

Materials:
-vintage fur collar (salvaged from an old coat)
-long navette Swroavski sew-on crystals
-long glass bugle beads
-fire polished 3mm faceted Czech beads

how to fur collar

To attach the fur to the jacket, line up the center back of the collar to the center back of the jacket collar (this only works if the fur collar has a lining).  Loosely tack the collar and fur collar in a zig zag manner outwards towards the collar points in both directions.

For the embroidery, I started stitching down the jewels in place first, then followed up with the black bugle beads to accentuate the existing pattern.  Depending on the fabric of the jacket you are working on, you can adjust your materials to fit the motifs.  Long bugles are great for geometric lines, seed beads or rhinestones are great for adding pop to the center of flowers or spots.

how to embroidered collar
Funny story about this jacket.  I was on duty jury for an excruciatingly long trial for a rapper who shot her friend.  The bailiff who was in charge of us was a very intimidating Tom Sizemore lookalike who never cracked a smile.

For the length of the trial, I was always carrying around this tote bag from Angry Little Girls.

Apparently, Mr. Not Sizemore was the only one to notice my bag.  When a flamboyant male fellow juror complimented this brocade jacket, the bailiff said back to him "Get your own jacket Bitch!" smiling, proud that he gave a sassy fashion comeback.  Then, looking at the face of the shocked other juror, he realized that no one was in on the joke and turned beet red.  I on the other hand, couldn't stop giggling and patted the bailiff on the shoulder to assure him he was funny before explaining to the poor juror he wasn't being given a style smackdown by the Bailiff.

What did you think of the jacket makeover?  Have you given your own closet items an upgrade?  Share them with me!

Nanette Lepore Spring 2013 - Pantone's Color of the Year

nanette lepore purse green

nanette lepore spring 2013
The color emerald was just announced as Pantone's color of the year for 2013.  According to the color agency, the hue represents “clarity, renewal and rejuvenation.”  One fashion designer Nanette Lepore was clearly clairvoyant on the importance of emerald in her spring 2013 collection.

The bright jewel shade was the most prominent color on her runway in both solids and a range of botanical prints, often mixed together.  Her accessories of handbags and shoes also reflected the significance of emerald green.   There was an upscale garden party feeling to this collection, with white, back and shades of last year's color of the year, tangerine thrown in.   (See the rest of the collection here.) You would think the cheerful look of the clothing would transfer into happier looks on the models, but they looked rather annoyed as a whole.  Why is that necessary?

Nanette Lepore is one of the most prominent advocates for Save the Garment Center and keeping fashion manufacturing in New York.  Believe it or not, with the efforts of designer like herself, garment production in this country has actually risen 11% in the recent year.  Let's hope more designers jump on this bandwagon.

Pantone chooses the color of the year based on factors like travel destinations, uses in popular art and film.  After the color is announced, watch the trickle effect into home interior and fashion design, beauty trends and advertising graphics.  Peter Pan has never been so fashionable.

Design Contest: Stitch Collective Handbag Design

Emerging Designer Handbag Design Competition

Stitch Collective is a New York-based handbag line that collaborates with independent designers to develop their collection. They produce all their handbags in their New York factory and sell direct to consumer online which helps keep costs low.
For December, they have a design challenge for designers to  “design a bag born to rule the city streets.”
Contest Details:
“As many city dwellers do, we’ve been searching high and low for the perfect handbag — the one that will get you from lunch dates to the office, from errands to happy hour. We want to be able to toss in all of the city’s daily essentials and take it with us. It should be worthy of street-style stars and simultaneously practical. We want luxury and sensibility to keep up with a flexible metropolitan lifestyle. Keep in mind color, material and silhouette to create a sartorial treat both timeless and original.”
On January 1, consumers and fans will get to vote on the handbag design. In February, the winner will be announced and featured on their website.
The winning bag will go into production and the designer will receive $500 along with exposure and mention of their name.
Sketches should include the following details in jpeg or pdf format and be emailed to sketch@stitchcollective.com.
  • Front, side and back view in black and white with dimensions listed
  • One front view in color
