Fairy Tale Fashion: Georgine Fall 2016

Make a wish, hide in the woods. Georgine's Fall 2016 collection was inspired by Grimm's Fairy Tales. It had a fanciful, darker tone with lots of pretty embellishments. This was not the wardrobe of a fairy princess. The silhouettes were slim and body conscious. It was more the seductive villain just making her way through the castle.

There were whimsical embellishments like metallic candy appliques, dark flowers, dragonflies, and birds. Beautiful sequin embroidery embellished a slinky gown fit for an ice queen. Forest green sequins embroidered leaves onto a fur collar ensemble. There was a witty sweater with "Grumpy" across the front as a nod to Snow White's seven dwarves. Silk, fur, knits and glittering accents made the mix of outerwear, sportswear, and eveningwear perfect for a day into night lifestyle.
This is how I like to dress. I love the idea of a sensible sweater with exaggerated shoulders or a trenchcoat with beaded flowers and ribbon belt. I believe velvet and satin should be daywear fabrics. The makeup on the models had a bit of a Gothic edge. Lips were blood red or off-black and purple. Hair was often swept up and knotted high on the head to accentuate high-neck silhouettes. Many of the models wore dark sunglasses for that mysterious air or librarian glasses to pay tribute to the literary roots of fairy tales.

My favorite part of late summer is seeing all of the autumn fashions hit the stores. Georgine Ratelband's fall collection offers a sartorial happy ending for all.

Georgine Fall 2015

More 1970's glam for fall 2015. Georgine Ratelband's NY Fashion Week show was full of lush, fluffy fur in rich jewel tone colors. Satin, lame and hand-painted velvet made the runway look like a luxurious extension of Studio 54.

The disco styling was extreme with curly hair, epic smokey eye makeup, and dark lips. The color palette was almost Gothic. The accessories included chunky platform heels, big fur clutch handbags in the same hues as the coats and stoles. Jewelry included cuff bracelets and chunky rings.

While the 1970's was a clear influence, the individual pieces of the collection are not as literal. The straight wrap skirts, short shorts, slim silky pants had a contemporary fit and silhouette, The body conscious tops, blouses or dresses may have been styled to look disco, but realistically are more office friendly than the catwalk would make you believe.

I think that is what most non-industry observers needs to distinguish when they see press coverage of runway fashion. Styling for media versus how the clothes fit into a customer's lives. A talented designer label knows how to straddle both. Georgine is a New York designer who produces much of her collection locally (the home of Studio 54) and also more luxurious pieces in Italy.

The Georgine Fall 2015 collection had all the colors I personally love. The makeup colors were all in my comfort zone too. I personally would love wearing most of these looks during the day, though I also "love the nightlife".

#NYFW Georgine Ratelband Spring 2015

georgine spring 2015

It's getting cold  here in New York. I am dreaming of a luxurious resort to spend the frigid months and Georgine Ratelband just returned from one. Her Spring 2015 collection for New York Fashion week was inspired by her trip to Thailand’s posh island of Koh Samui.

Retro jetsetters like Loulou de la Falaise and Bianca Jagger also served as muses for the 1970s global glam. The collection is definitely not for the office. There are a lot of luxe lounge wear with shimmering fabrics that take socialites from beach to the ultra-exclusive nightspot. Think elegant flowing pants and caftans, cropped tops and metallic swimwear.

Big floppy wide brimmed hats and silk turbans evoked the glamorous movie stars of decades past. My favorite accessory was the surfboard shaped handbags attached with a chic bracelet cuff like a cheeky nod to surfer’s ankle straps. These looks may have been meant for the beach, but don’t look for flip flops on this runway. Every model wore slim, strappy heels.

Georgine is a very young brand. The designer only graduated from Milan’s Istituto Europeo di Design in 2011. Her label was launched when a luxury retailer in Antwerp purchased her thesis collection. The collection quickly gained a following promoting a luxury aesthetic that we would all love to partake…
