Ms. Fabulous: Favorite Moments of 2014

Happy 2015 my divas! On this first day of the year I wanted to reflect on the most memorable moments for the Ms. Fabulous site. I compiled a bunch of our top fashion blog posts in terms of personal favorites to write, photograph, emotionally moving and popularity.

I started this blog as a creative outlet in rediscovering what I loved about fashion; the culture that inspires it. I love to cover great events and the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum was my favorite. I am also a big fan of costume design. The event that made the biggest impression on me was Lady Gaga’s ArtRave.

The most popular post in 2014 was unexpected. I wrote a spontaneous ode to the fashion eccentric fictional character of Myrtle Snow on American Horror Story. Overnight, the post had gone viral. There is a certain comfort in realizing how many twisted, style obsessed fans are out in the internet as me.

At Ms. Fabulous, we specialize in our runway coverage. For the past few years, our team here including David TW Leung, Mdivani Monroe and I have embedded ourselves into the photographer’s pit at New York, Miami and Toronto fashion week to bring you coverage from the front lines. I wrote 5 Things Only Fashion Week Photographers Understand as a tribute to all of the hardworking shooters at the end of the runway.

The runway shows themselves? The one that left the biggest impression was the Alleles & VAWK show in Toronto. Their collaboration incorporated 3D printed technology to create beautiful prosthetic limbs that were both functional and chic to coordinate with the clothing collection. The collections that were the most fun to shoot included Betsey Johnson, Beach Bunny’s collaboration with The Blonds and Desigual’s show starring Adriana Lima. Sometimes the best runway moments are the spontaneous ones. Zang Toi celebrated his 25th anniversary at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in September. Press corps leader Richard Renda chased him down the runway to present him a cake when the shy designer fled. It was a hilarious and touching moment that I was honored to be a part of.

The saddest post I had to write was my remembrance of Oscar de la Renta. There are certainly many people in the industry who knew the designer better. However, the brief meetings I had with him in my career made a huge impression.

Bonus:
We pimped ourselves out to other publications too. My piece for Narrative.ly on the War of the Fashion Bloggers gained kudos and haters alike.

We created fashion pieces for Genesis Rodriguez’s cover shoot for Siempre Mujer and Carol Alt’s upcoming movie Stealing Chanel.

Ms. Fabulous wishes you a glamorous, successful 2015!

Jean Paul Gaultier: Sidewalk to the Catwalk

gaultier virgins
Disturbing, provocative, delightful.  All of the above and more was found at the Brooklyn Museum's The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk exhibit.

Gaultier created some of the most iconic looks of my generation.  Everyone recognizes the cone cup corsets of Madonna's Blond Ambition Tour .  Fashion fans have marveled at the varied inspirations and theatrical runway shows over the years.

The exhibit itself was not your typical, institutional retrospective you would expect from a museum.  Upon entering the first gallery, you are startled when you gaze at the mannequins and find them blinking or even glaring back at you.  The "Virgins" collection had mannequins singing, wearing dresses inspired by religious icons.  The mermaids on the other side were adorned in mother of pearl and golden filigree.

The designer's mastery of intimate and apparel were displayed in a long dark corridor on spinning dress forms so you could see the painstaking details that went into each and every piece.

The gallery of punk style had elaborate creations in denim and tartan.  A moving runway displayed cheeky looks like a cancan dress that was painted with legs on the interior, but looked like a more conservative white ruffled dress on the outside.  The punk mannequins could make you jump, whispering that they were "behind you" as you observed other parts of the room.

Gorgeous looks worn by the likes of singers like Beth Ditto were part of a gallery that showed the diversity of age, body shape and ethnicity that the designer liked to portray on the runway.  Another room showed the global influences of design that made their way to his shows.  One of the most impressive looks in this room was the Asian-inspired look of his first collection that he put together with straw placements from the local market before he had the money to fund more expensive fabrics.

While Jean Paul Gaultier clearly took craftmanship and design very seriously, his own persona was another matter.  A talking mannequin of himself hosted the exhibit and the attitude of his catwalks always showed a sense of fun.  Photographs or interviews with him always portrayed a winking sensibility that I enjoyed.

This exhibit is a must-see and one of my favorites in recent years.  Get yourself to the Brooklyn Museum before February 23, 2014!

Jean Paul Gaultier at the Brooklyn Museum

He was the hottest designer of my 1990's.  Starting tomorrow, the Brooklyn Museum presents The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From Sidewalk to Catwalk.  I am absolutely excited about this, as I was unable to see the exhibit in Montreal.

The Brooklyn Museum is the only American East Coast venue for this show.  It will feature sketches, Haute Couture, documentaries and all sorts of artifacts of his creative process and wicked humor.  He defined Madonna's look of the 90's as well as contributing subversive looks for movies.

For a taste of what's to come, check out this arty video from Mr. Gaultier welcoming you to Brooklyn..

Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Fall 2012

gaultier couture

Jean Paul-Gaultier’s couture show earlier this week was hotly anticipated, perhaps as much for the 90 minute delay as the show itself, (based on the Twitter complaints from FT’s Jeanne Beker to NY Times’ Cathy Horyn).

Mr. Gaultier was the designer to rule the 1990’s.  Madonna’s image has been forever linked to the French couturier’s cone bras and revived again on her current tour.

For Fall 2012, his Haute Couture collection continued on his gender-bending theme.  There were corseted looks mixed with menswear tailoring.  There were 19th century references to provocative, cross dressing female author George Sand.  Some Paul Poiret inspired Orientalism touches and fanciful circus themes that reminded me of the romantic novel The Night Circus that I just read.

The overall look was rebellious, sexy, elegant and exquisite in its craftsmanship.  The badboy has long proven he can make good.  I hope he continues to inspire.

Seven Bold Print Dresses for Summer

thingswelove_brwn2.png
In fall and winter, I burrow into my wardrobe of black, charcoal, eggplant, navy...  I made it a strict resolution this year to brighten things up when summer came around.  I promised bold prints, bright colors and an attitude that forces me to not take life too seriously!  For the last in Hawaiian Tropic's Things We Love summer fashion series, we explore prints.

I found this cute chicken and egg print at ModCloth.  It literally made my Hubby speechless and dissolve into giggles at the sight of it.  He thought it was the most adorable dress he has ever seen (an adult) wear. I guess I'll take that as a compliment.  I paired it with a knit bolero from The Limited and a white/gold picture frame necklace from Bauble Bar.

If poultry isn't your thing, I found a bunch of other gorgeously printed dresses for summer...  In the top left corner is an Escada abstract dress, the bottom left corner is ModCloth's Kaleidoscope dress.  In the center is a beautiful floral and vintage wallpaper print dress from Jean Paul Gaultier.  Top right is a draped dress from Full Circle, the middle floral dress is from Alice & Olivia and the bottom right is a foil geometric print from Paprika.

There is a frock for every price range, so you can make a statement no matter what you want to spend.

Jean Paul Gaultier at Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

A French-Canadian museum gets tres chic today as Fashion's French bad-boy gets a retrospective.  The exhibit celebrates the Jean Paul Gaultier's 35 years in design.  The looks presented are divided into five themes of his influence on fashion design,  Paris, Fusions, Multi-Gender, Eurotrash/X-rated and Metropolis.

Besides clothing creations, the museum will display photos, sketches and audiovisual elements.  Mainstream fans will probably look for his collaborations with pop culture icons like Lady Gaga, Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Andy Warhol.  What would lingerie be without the iconic cone bra?  Gaultier also contributed to memorable looks in film, photography and concerts.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts exhibit of The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk runs until October 2, 2011.

Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Spring 2011

Are you a fashion geek like me and followed Jean Paul Gaultier through the years?  If you did, you would have loved his most recent Haute Couture showing.  It mixed the elaborate silhouettes, miles of silk tulle and dramatic head pieces he is known for.

This collection had some punk influence, some Can-Can surprises and wildly colorful prints.  A certain flamenco influence that we have seen before made its way to some of the looks.  While thumping DJ sets are expected at most fashion shows these days, Gaultier bucked the standard and surprised everyone with an elegant Catherine Deneuve.  Her voice announced each look verbally in the tradition of Haute Couture's classic presentations.

Accessories included the dramatic feathered mohawks of course.  Some of the models sported the JPG and Alain Mikli collaborative group of eyeglasses.

Vogue's Masked Ball

French Vogue celebrated its 90th birthday with an elaborate masked ball.  Designers Jean-Paul Gaultier and Jeremy Scott mingled with models Gisele Bundchen and Tyra Banks.  Other celebrities included Lenny Kravitz and Dita Von Teese.

The black couture gowns were elegant of course, but those with true style expressed it with their facial accessories... Gisele wore a spiraling sculpture of a mask that covered only one eye.  Bianca Jagger and Gaultier went for flamboyant feathers.  Tyra Banks was one of the most photographed of the evening with her last-minute improvised mask of cut-up fishnet stockings....

Jean Paul Gaultier Accepts First AmfAR Inspiration Award

We already know he is a wicked and brilliant designer… The Paris-based Jean Paul Gaultier will be feted June 3rd, 2010 in New York for his achievements in mens fashion and fight against AIDS. The award is for lifetime achievement and will be hosted by Kylie Minogue, along with guests like Lady Gaga at a formal soiree for at the New York Public Library.

This being a Gaultier night… The evening’s theme is “Black Tie/Black Leather” and guests are encouraged to “Dress accordingly”. (Cone bras and insect corsets anyone?)
