How Important is Inauguration Fashion?

This was the president that we were waiting for, a history-making vice-president, following a terrible attack egged on by a failed excuse of a leader before them. With all of that before us, is the inauguration fashion actually important?

As someone who has worked in the fashion industry for over 20 years, and seeing most of my friends and colleagues lose their jobs in recent times, any buzz about the industry is only good. Besides that, is fashion really relevant to the country at large? The outfit choices of political wives were traditionally reported on as a way to engage women of decades past who were assumed to have no interest in politics otherwise. Also, what is acceptable for male political fashion was and still is pretty limited for creativity.

Now there is a Second Gentleman instead of a Lady. There were plenty of female writers joking about getting the details of Doug Emhoff's outfit today. The details were that President Joe Biden and Doug Emhoff wore Ralph Lauren, an American designer whose brand has been present at most significant events of this country. Lauren has provided Olympic uniforms, dressed award shows, and positioned his brand as the American establishment. It makes sense.

All of the women on stage today are highly accomplished, and there are so many topics to discuss that should be more relevant. However, the reality is that the fashion questions will always be asked. The women have been very strategic in using clothing to help elevate their message rather than a distraction.

The First Lady wore a matching blue outfit by Alexandra O'Neill for the label Markarian. The blue was meant to "signify trust, confidence, and stability." Blue is also the color associated with the Democratic party. The less obvious statement, but important to the fashion industry and the country, is that it was designed and manufactured in New York's garment district. A visual statement of supporting industry at home.

Jill Biden's outfit the evening before was purple, a statement of intention of bipartisanship. The chosen designer was indie Jonathan Cohen, known for upcycling and passion for sustainability.

Today, many women posted they would wear "Pearls and Chucks" today in honor of Vice President Kamala Harris.  Her fashion choices have all been in support of a larger message. Her signature pearls reference her sorority, while her footwear is representative of her confidence and comfort. She wore a white Carolina Herrera suit with a pussy-bow blouse when she accepted Biden's running mate's role. The color was symbolic of the women suffrage movement, the blouse a nod to England's first female Prime Minister.

Her pre-inauguration look included a coat by Kerby Jean-Raymond, the Haitian-American designer of Pyer Moss. He has used his fashion shows to promote Black Lives Matter and express other messages of resistance. However, when the pandemic hit, he repurposed his studio into a donation center, donating PPE and grants to women/minority-owned businesses that took a hit during the crisis.

Kamala Harris's inauguration look was by another African-American designer. Her purple look (also bipartisan in color) was from Christopher John Rogers and Sergio Hudson's shoes. Her choices of lesser-known American designers (in the mainstream) lifts the profiles of indie labels overall, struggling hard in this pandemic.

Harris's choices follow in First Lady Michelle Obama's footsteps, who made household names of many designers who might have been respected within fashion circles but not known to the average citizen. Jason Wu, Byron Lars, Tracy Reese were all celebrated for contributing to Obama's fashion icon status. She also drove interest in smaller labels in general, boosting the industry as a whole.

Today was yet another opportunity for Michelle Obama to add to her style fame. Her plum-colored ensemble was also by Sergio Hudson. I saw lots of love for her look from my colleagues on social media. There was even a good number of posts merely to appreciate her belt.

Speaking of accessory love, Bernie Sanders got quite a bit of attention for his knitted mittens.
His cold-weather seated photo is the most popular meme right now, but as a man not usually known for fashion statements, this was a good one. Fans liked the bold pattern and home-grown look, knitted by Vermont schoolteacher Jen Ellis from upcycled sweaters and recycled plastic. I can't imagine anything more on-brand for Bernie than that.

New faces that I loved? Poet-laureate Amanda Gorman moved everyone with her poem "The Hill We Climb." Her bright yellow Prada coat and red headband, together with her beautiful smile, were like sunbeams across the great lawn. Her jewelry, on the other hand, was more meaningful. A gift from Oprah Winfrey, her birdcage ring was a reference to legendary Maya Angelou, who read her poetry at Bill Clinton's inauguration.

All the nerdy girls had a crush on Elle Emhoff. She was the breakout darling of the day with her talented eyebrows and jewel-embroidered tweed coat by Miu Miu. Her dress was from Batsheva and a headband by Loeffler Randall. While she wore designer goods today, you might find her wearing her own creations most of the time. She is a textiles senior at Parsons School of Design, with a talent for crochet and bright colors.

Did any outfit today intrigue you? Has inauguration fashion ever inspired you to learn more about the designer or what they represent? Let me know!

The Costumes of Lady Gaga's Art Rave - ArtPop Ball

I had the most amazing time last night at the Lady Gaga ArtPop Ball! I didn't think a high-ticket Madison Square Garden sized venue could evoke the Art Raves of my youth, but she made it happen and more.  The costumes in the concert were some of the most creative pieces I have ever seen in pop overseen by fashion director Brandon Maxwell and costume designer Perry Meek.

Lady Gaga opened with a golden angel type costume of wings, Swarovski encrusted body suit and huge metallic gazing ball embedded in her chest, courtesy of artist Jeff Koons.  Next, was the jewel encrusted seashell bikini paired with a massive hair style on the star while the dancers were clad in bright alien costumes.

My favorite costume had to be the Octopus design with inflatable tentacles.  The silhouette of this emulated the Vegas showgirl outfits with long train and dramatic headpiece.  The bright polka dot pattern made her look like an anime fantasy.  The inflatable elements on the her and her dancers costumes were very clever.  In addition to the visual statement of the shapes, the lightness of those pieces made it easy for them to maneuver them as part of their dance or looked great in motion as they moved across the stage.

Lady Gaga had a more stripped down outfit of black vinyl pant, top and green wig.  She did a full costume change right onstage from this outfit to the ravers outfit of crazy braided wig, vinyl babydoll dress and furry legwarmers.  The dancing stadium, outfit and pumping techno beats totally brought me back to nights at the Limelight in the 1990's.  Yes, I just dated myself, and yes, I have attended a few fuzzily remembered art raves back in the day.

Her finale look was a couture-inspired white and crystal dress paired with a long wig.  She gave a shout-out to fashion, Donatella Versace and a strutted the stage like a runway.  The hair was down her back like a wraith, the dress had elements of Thierry Mugler.

Back in my school days, I worshiped the tour costumes of Madonna from Jean-Paul Gaultier and Dolce & Gabbana.  She raised the bar in mixing culture and high fashion as the new standard for concert chic and Lady Gaga inherited this tradition with pride.

Punk, Goth, Sex: Fashion Mates Music

Punk was a music movement that ruled England in the 1970’s and 1980’s.  Malcolm McLaren managed the top bands of the era like the Sex Pistols and the New York Dolls.  A former schoolteacher, McLaren’s new wife brought the punk movement to fashion by infusing clothes with safety pins, chains and bondage. She is now of course, British fashion icon Vivienne Westwood.

In the 1990’s, Jean-Paul Gaultier was the bad boy of the designer set with his bleached spiky hair and fetish-inspired outfit.  His cone cup bras were synonymous with Madonna’s dominance in that decade.  His fetish inspired looks mixed punk with nineties decadence.

Thierry Mugler and supermodels took over as the look of George Michael’s top hit, Too Funky.  Rock n’roll and fetish wear became the official uniform of the song.  The designer himself directed the video with a runway filled with motorcycle bustiers, latex catsuits and metalized bodysuits.

Punk gave way to grunge.  Marc Jacobs became a household name more for his firing from Perry Ellis before succeeding with his own label.  Thrift stores were plundered for Doc Martens and old plaid shirts when alternative bands like Nirvana dominated MTV.

Punk fashion took on Goth, mixing fetish elements and corsetry.  Lady Gaga’s quick pop icon status owed a lot to the unforgettable fashion statements she made in every public appearance.  Her longtime collaborator, Nicola Formichetti went on to be appointed as creative director to fashion house Thierry Mugler, a perfect fit.  With fresh meat dresses, cross dressing and body modification, Lady Gaga brought a whole new level to anarchy when it came to busting fashion taboos.  That is more punk in attitude than a bunch of safety pins will ever be.

Does Nina Sky think musicians influence fashion today?

Majorly, people love to listen to music and keep up with their favorite artists, from their latest videos to what they're wearing... So of course it would influence fashion trends. Also, music inspires creativity and fashion designers are artists in their own right. I think the music they listen to ultimately helps set the tone and theme of their collections."

Jean Paul Gaultier at Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

A French-Canadian museum gets tres chic today as Fashion's French bad-boy gets a retrospective.  The exhibit celebrates the Jean Paul Gaultier's 35 years in design.  The looks presented are divided into five themes of his influence on fashion design,  Paris, Fusions, Multi-Gender, Eurotrash/X-rated and Metropolis.

Besides clothing creations, the museum will display photos, sketches and audiovisual elements.  Mainstream fans will probably look for his collaborations with pop culture icons like Lady Gaga, Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Andy Warhol.  What would lingerie be without the iconic cone bra?  Gaultier also contributed to memorable looks in film, photography and concerts.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts exhibit of The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk runs until October 2, 2011.

Fashion, Music and Hollywood Elite for CFDA Awards

The CFDA awards used to be about hardcore fashion industry insiders celebrating their achievements.  Last night's awards though, brought out the top names in music (Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Estelle), Hollywood (Jessica Alba, Olsen Twins, Kirsten Dunst) and journalishm (Andersen Cooper).  Designers, merchants, retailers still ruled the carpet and took home the trophies.

Designer of the year for womenswear was awarded to Proenza Schouler's  Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez.  For menswear, Michael Bastian took home the designer honors.  Alexander Wang won the award for Accessories Designer of the Year.

While it seems that the fashion crowd has been aware of Prabal Gurung's achievements for quite some time, he won the Swarovski award for emerging talent.  The forever-hot Marc Jacobs won the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement award, (even though he has yet to hit middle age).

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty at the Met

Shocking, visionary, artist, a true designer. Alexander McQueen's death shocked and saddened many of the fashion world, but his creative legacy is eternal. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC launches Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty today. The extensive exhibit is one of the most elaborate, dramatic tributes to a designer I have ever seen.

The Savage Beauty Exhibit is a portrait of fashion genius:

The exhibit opens with two mannequins in a darkened foyer. One dressed in an ombre red feather gown, the other in a sculpted dress made of razor shells. You then proceed into soaring black-walled halls with antiqued gilded mirrors and horror movie sound effects.  The display of impeccably tailored black suits showed of McQueen's Savile Row background, but the rebellious variations of draping and corset finishing were all his vision. This was the most sedate part of the exhibit.

Gaga for Mugler Fall 2011

Were you waiting to feel too funky again? Or am I just dating myself?  I miss Thierry Mugler’s hyper-sexualized fashion rocking the runway.  Lady Gaga’s longtime fashion collaborator Nichola Formichetti was appointed creative director to the Mugler brand and brought it back to the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week.

The show was a mix of Gothic fetish evolved from the slick spirit of classic Mugler.  The backdrop was a stage of pointed cathedral arches.  Formichetti showed alien-like exaggerated shoulders, a signature look of Lady Gaga’s.  Latex-shiny fabrics, dramatic cut-outs and transparent garments that left nothing to the imagination somehow managed to look chic (over trashy).  The muse, Gaga, brought much of the paparazzi with her as she debuted new singles and strutted her body down the runway.  Also haunting the runway was performance artist “Zombie Boy”, famous for corpse-like tattoos added to the other-worldly theme.

This was the multi-media fashion spectacle of 2011.  A mix of music, video, art and fans madly tweeting is not the show of the future, it’s the mode of today.

Behind the Scenes: Celebrity Photographer Dimitrios Kambouris

New York City native Dimitrios Kambouris is the go-to photographer hired by top PR agencies and publications to cover premieres and fashion events. One of his career highlights include having his photo of Madonna gracing New York Magazine’s most notable covers of the 2009.

After a hectic stint at Mercedes-Benz Fashion week, Ms. Fabulous, Mariana Leung asked the photographer about his craft:

MsFABulous: What did your photography training consist of?
DIMITRIOS KAMBOURIS: Worked in a camera store/one-hour photo lab while a student at Bryant High School in Astoria, Queens.

MsFAB: What led you into fashion and celebrity photography?
DK: Got hands advice from professional photographers, such as Dan Lecca, when they dropped off film.

MsFAB: What photo of yours are you most proud of?
DK: Lady Gaga and Madonna backstage after the Marc Jacobs 2010 Spring fashion show. It was the first time they were ever photographed together.

MsFAB: Who is your favorite photography subject?
DK: Celebrity, Fashion, Music/Concert

MsFAB: What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone who aspires to be a fashion/celebrity photographer? -
DK: Be hands on. Take the photos yourself. You can’t read a book or have someone tell you what to do. Digital is so easy, like a Polaroid, so you can make corrections. Play with shutter speeds and apertures. Learn from your mistakes. Actually, there are no mistakes… everything just looks different.

MsFAB: Thanks Dimitrios!
