MILAN FASHION WEEK: Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2011

In New York, it was all about crochet and eyelet.  For Dolce & Gabbana ready to wear, it was about lace.  Most of the collection turned out look after look of easy, spring-friendly white outfits.  Feminine lace dresses that looked perfect in a green meadow.

There were a few pieces with their signature leopard print incorporated into the lace.  A few unstructured suits in an equally ladylike floral pattern as well.   Accessories included demure tiny handbags with gold chains and larger sleeker carryalls in white or leopard.  Earrings were big and bold.

While the collection was mostly very pretty, many of the looks reminded my of sleepwear.  A lot of the silhouettes, while gorgeous on a professional runway model, would look like a maternity nightgown on the average person.

MILAN FASHION WEEK: Prada Spring 2011

Prada's Spring/Summer 2011 arrived to a mixed reaction.  The neon prints, pseudo-baroque embroidery, 1980's stripes were combined with fur pieces that looked like a Muppets massacre.  The effect was jarring, but will probably be remembered as brilliant...

Milan Fashion Week: Versace Fall 2010

Donatella Versace, muse to her late brother, as well as several brilliant Saturday Night Live tributes. The Versace collection always brings to mind, brightly draped Roman Goddesses, golden Medusa heads and an opulent Italian lifestyle. For next Fall 2010 however, the house of Donatella seemed to take some notes from her American counterparts.

The runway displayed a lot of very tailored pieces, in dark colors as well as some bright blues, yellows and oranges. To off-set the more classic look of the tailoring, there were some rock n’ roll touches of slashed shoulders and cutouts, as well as body conscious zipper details. It seems like the continental diva likes to rock out like those of us Stateside.

The handbags were shiny, reptilian and had shadows of brightly colored accents that worked back to the clothing.

Milan Fashion Week: Emilio Pucci Fall 2010

I purchased a Pucci beach bag last year, it’s bright blue, pink and white in terry cloth. The busy print was exactly what I came to expect and love from the iconic design house. Then comes hot young thing Peter Dundas and turns that all around. The Pucci collection for Fall 2010 showed a decidedly darker edge. The multi color prints were reinterpreted into black, tonal patterns. The muse seemed to be a luxe bohemian, but with a cosmopolitan edge, perhaps Bianca Jagger? The handbags were missing their signature prints. Instead I saw dark, edgy colors with long dramatic fringe. I saw haute hippie feathers hanging off another, and big messenger bags with wide straps befitting a chic nomad.
