Exquisitely Evil: Bond Villain Style

The best villains in movies had great style.  No one does flamboyant evil than a James Bond Villain.  This theme is being celebrated in Exquisitely Evil: 50 Years of Bond Villains at the International Spy Museum in Washington D.C.

I enjoyed this exhibit over the weekend while learning about the history of espionage.  While the museum was curated to cater to the Hollywood idea of spies, the interactive design was highly educational and fun.

The Bond Villain exhibit was the start of the museum.  It highlighted costumes ad props worn in the film like Famke Janssen's curvy leather Russian operative uniform to Christopher Walken's tailored suit as Max Zorin.  For Bond villains, accessories are functional additions to your look.  Think lethal footwear that had switchblades or guns embedded and a "dream" mask worn by Toby Stephen's Gustav Graves in "Die Another Day".

Funny how life imitates art.  Many of the tricked out spy gadgets ended up inspiring real gadgets used in espionage.  I did see umbrellas that could shoot poison pellets that were used in actual assassination plots.  There were blades designed for close combat stitched into lapels.

One of the most important things a spy learns is their cover or "legend".  Both the International Spy Museum and 50 Years of Bond Villains proved that your costume and your looks are a vital part of that.

Fashion Police: James Bond Fashion Crimes

James Bond is known for impeccably cut suits, suave style, expensive trinket and gorgeous girls.  It may surprise you to find that there have been many fashion don'ts in the run of this franchise...

I came across the hilarious round-up from I09 that brought these to my attention.  Number one, Mr.(machismo to the point of misogyny) Sean Connery in a terrycloth hotpants jumper from 1964's GoldFinger.
More hot pants? Love this shiny red scuba jacket?  Um, I am a scuba diver and I have never seen anyone where anything like this.  The red crotch is like a target for sharks.  This is from 1965's Thunderball.  Maybe the sexy fashions of the 1960's just didn't age well.

The article mocks some of the uniforms worn in films like Octopussy.  I don't mind these so much, they are no worse than superhero costumes in all the comic-book movies.

Criticizing the sartorial choices of the most flamboyant villains of James Bond seems a little unfair.  I think it adds to their character.  While I don't agree with the pyrite dentures of "Jaws" from 1979's Moonraker, I have to love the polka dots from Live and Let Die. Grace Jones in 1985's A View to a Kill is just the queen of fierce.

Definite NOs:

Was is it just the 1970s? Roger Moore framed in fluffy feathers, embroidered cape like Liz Taylor in Cleopatra?  He looked like a parade float. Live and Let Die definitely had more than its share of fashion felonies. In the opening scene of The Spy Who Loved Me, he is dressed like Ronald McDonald making a ski jump. WTF.

Ursula Andress, Halle Berry and even Bond himself Daniel Craig have made some of the most memorable movie moments in their bathing suits (in a good way).  What were they thinking in putting poor Tiffany Case in a long sleeved, awkwardly belted, badly fit bottomed piece in 1971's Diamonds are Forever?  No.

If you need to erase some of these from your eyes, check out Designing 007: 50 Years of Bond Style, an exhibit that features the good style from these films.  Did you know that designers like Oscar de la Renta, Givenchy and Miuccia Prada have all contributed to James Bond?

Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style

PA Photos / Landov

Yes Bond, James Bond has always been a showcase for gadgetry and high end style.  A lot of design talent went into crafting the many iconic scenes over the years.  The Barbican Center in London is hosting the Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style exhibit until September 5, 2012.
Many top fashion designers have contributed to the exquisitely tailored look of this spy and his cohorts.  Along with Hollywood costumers Lindy Hemming, Bumble Dawson, Donfeld and Julie Harris, the exhibit includes looks from  Giorgio Armani, Brioni, Roberto Cavalli, Tom Ford, Hubert de Givenchy, Gucci's Frida Giannini, Douglas Hayward, Rifat Ozbek, Jenny Packham, Miuccia Prada, Oscar de la Renta, Anthony Sinclair, Philip Treacy, Emanuel Ungaro and Donatella Versace.
See the evolution of sexy swimwear from Ursula Andress' famous white bikini from Dr. No, to Halle Berry's modern update in Die Another Day to Daniel Craig being the male version of eye candy in skimpy blue shorts in Casino Royale.
As for the famous tech and weapons, special effects experts John Stears and Chris Corbould are on hand along with artwork for sets and storyboards by production designers Sir Ken Adam, Peter Lamont and Syd Cain.
I wonder if the opening night party served up martinis...
