90's Grunge, Faux Fur From Iijin Fall 2016

Ah, the Iijin Fall 2016 collection brought me back to when I first arrived in NYC. Grunge glam was at an all-time high, disrupting the fashion establishment. Faux fur in crazy colors was all over Soho and the nightclubs of Manhattan. Doc Martens were clomping their way down the sidewalks of the East Village.

Husband and wife creative team Cassian Lau and his wife June Lee incorporated all of those trends for a throwback collection with a twist. The plaid flannels of the 1990's was given upgrade in tailored blazers and luxe cardigans. The punk-style boots were re-interpreted with pop colors on different feet or metallic leather. Instead of teddy bear backpacks or shapeless jackets, colorful fur was used for skirts, wraps, and bags.

I visited the Iijin store in Hong Kong last winter. It was in a youthful, urban standout surrounded by Gucci and Prada in a very posh mall. It is one of those labels that blends high-end sensibility with fun streetwear without looking cheap. Celebs like Kylie Jenner are already fans. They are represented on both coasts of the U.S. Let's see how long it takes for them to take over the world.
