WildFox Fall 2015 - La Dolce Vita

Gelato! Pasta! Italia! The Los Angeles-based knitwear brand Wildfox Couture took us all on a getaway to Italy for their Fall 2015 presentation. Retro slogans like "Kiss Me I'm Italian" and "Italians Do It Better" were printed on over-sized sweaters.

The location for the event was set in the classic restaurant in Little Italy, Il Cortile. The run of show program for the different looks was set up in a menu. The collections were set up into "Pastel Gelato Girls" "Vineyard Girls" and "Restaurant Girls". With Wildfox Couture having a vintage slant, you could see the pretty red gingham prints like a trattoria tablecloth (plus gingham is a HOT trend for fall), casually wrapped sweater like La Dolce Vita or more rugged overalls of someone about to work the vineyard. Of course, everything had a feminine touch with vintage lace and tongue-in-cheek attitude.

Models had smoky eyes makeup and sexy loose waves and blown out hair like they just woke up out of bed. I was hoping they would make an entrance on a moped.

Guests were treated to Italian wine tastings and nibbles like meatballs, fresh mozzarella crostini and pizza. I vamped it out at the photo booth with scenic Italian backdrop and Italian phrase speech bubbles. Some danced to IT DJ's the Misshapes.

It's not hard to see how the romance of Italy inspired design director Kimberley Gordon. I just watched the movie Under the Tuscan Sun (again), reminding me of my honeymoon in the area.

Ciao Wildfox Couture!

#WMCFW: Hilary MacMillan Fall 2015

wmcfw hillary macmillan

Another family affair, this time in Toronto. Canadian designer Hilary MacMillan's relatively new fashion label is known for its mix of luxurious fabrics and a signature print she develops every season. For fall 2015, she collaborated with members of her family to create a darker, rose and skeleton print.

The color palette was cream, black, bright and dark blood red. While it isn't obvious, the muse behind this season's collection was the Mexican holiday of Day of the Dead. The fashion show combined satins and leather, silk and knits. There were a lot of separates with updated proportions. Long topper jackets were paired with crop tops, loose pants that ended below the knee and jackets with elbow length sleeves. The models sported smokey eyes and slicked "wet look" hair (or they just ran out of the shower onto the runway).

Macmillan put the show in the fashion show, with the band St. Royals entertaining the guests. Guests included the who's who of Canadian showbiz personalities, like 24's Elisha Cuthbert and TV's Supernatural's Richard De Klerk.

Hilary MacMillan is committed to designing and manufacturing her label within Canada. She designs for the modern urban woman like herself. In a short time she has already made fans of all the top Canadian magazines. When you're on a roll, just enjoy the ride!

Mister Triple X at Art Hearts Fashion Fall 2015

art hearts fashion
mister triple x fashion

Who doesn't like a little kink and fetish to heat up the NY Fashion Week runway?
Mr. Triple X  opened the Art Hearts Fashion Show with a collection body conscious separates for both men and women that were accented with chains and leather straps. The signature pieces were more accessories that could be worn alone for a sexy club (or night in) look or to add some edge to more traditional fashion ensembles. My friends and family were most grateful for the plentiful eye candy of the male models.

The label is designed by Erik Rosete. He intended his collection to be a  high end street wear line for everyone's inner rock star. He is also one of the founders of Art Hearts Fashion organization which brings together artists, designers and creatives to produce events in multiple cities to benefit the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Before talent management and fashion, he actually started his career as a mortgage banker. Quite a complex background which no doubt benefits him now.

Like what you see? You can support Art Hearts Fashion and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation by texting "FIGHTAIDS" to 41444 to donate any amount you choose.

Desigual Fall 2015 With Chantelle Brown Young

desigual model skin
desigual fashion show

Fashion should have something for everyone. Spanish label Desigual made a statement on their fall 2015 runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week with a model lineup that represented a broad range of looks.

Their new spokesmodel Chantelle Brown Young opened the show. She was originally scouted by fan Tyra Banks to compete in America's Next Top Model. She stood out for her unique skin patterns as a result of a condition called vitiligo. While Chantelle was teased as a child, she has the last laugh from the end of top runways this season for New York Fashion Week. She was chosen to represent Desigual because her originality, beauty and multiple colors was in sync with the brand itself. Some of the prints of the collection seemed to be designed to line up with the patterns of her own skin like they were designed just for her.

The other models flaunted wild natural hair and big smiles. The other photographers and I always love shooting this show because the models get to dance and have fun.

The clothing was very cozy with woven, folk art type patterns that had hints of Native American blankets, South American motifs. Other prints echoed painted abstract art. The short easy dresses are perfect for romping around in. The tapestry coats are great to make a statement when the weather gets chilly. Accessories included handbags that matched the prints and hats with big over sized pom poms.

I love that a brand that really tries to appeal to the independent spirit and being unique actually hired a model that embodies that. I found that diversity was not well represented on this season's runways as a whole, but this is one of the few shows that always has international appeal. Keep the party going Desigual!

Spring Trends with Max Studio's $1000 Online Shopping Spree!

max studio spring 2015

Are you ready for some spring fashion and spring shopping? Leon Max is helping you out with a $1000 gift card giveaway to nab the latest spring trends for your closet. I have been a longtime fan of Max Studio’s Euro-chic style and fashion forward fabrications.

Inspired by 2015’s Color of the Year Marsala, I have already picked out some of the spring and summer Max Studio pieces I will be buying if I win this contest. I love all the spice colors of the cotton rayon cap sleeve sweater dress. The leather moto jacket has a feminine update and great for layering on top of dresses in cooler weather. I love a bohemian hat and paparazzi-repelling sunglasses. Those slashed leather stilettos? How HOT are those?

Of course, I am not the only shopper of Leon Max’s fashion collection. Zooey Deschanel and Olivia Wilde also count themselves as fans. I particularly love the body hugging knits and beaded details on the evening pieces. The Hollywood set I’m sure is lounging around in their floating maxi dresses.
The jet-setting look of the Max Studio fashion collection is so comprehensive because their design team spans Los Angeles, New York, and London. If you look closely at the styles, you can almost pick out exactly where each look was designed.

I also like their collections because I find that the styles are really well priced for the quality and construction of each style. I don’t always splurge, but I have Max Studio dresses from fifteen years ago that I still love.

Whether you are shopping on your own or letting Leon Max treat you, stay up to date on the latest new on the brand from the Max Studio Facebook page. Don’t forget to enter their $1000 gift card giveaway right on their site! You just need to enter your e-mail before Friday, March 27th, 2015.

MONGOL by Bayarmaa Bayarkhuu Fall 2015 Mongolian Fashion

mongol fall 2015
bayarmaa bayankhuu

Is the nomad the biggest trend of 2015? Bayarmaa Bayarkhuu is a relative newcomer to the New York Fashion Week scene. The designer launched the brand ten years ago and brought MONGOL from Ulaanbaatar to Lincoln Center.

While Asian manufacturing and Asian designers have long been a major influence over the fashion industry, only in recent seasons have I seen Mongolian fashion as a theme. THEIA referenced Mongolian nomads in their bridal collection; Anna Sui has worked in those influences into their bohemian vibe. Mongolian designer Katya Zol brought dance and a gorgeous collection in Fall 2014.

Is Mongolian Fashion the new trend?

This fashion show opened with a fantastic performance that blended traditional chanting and Dubstep. Who knew the two music genres could work so well together?
Bayarmaa Bayarkhuu referenced many elements of her native country’s costume but re-interpreted them in modern ways, much like Vivienne Tam did with Chinese fashion over twenty years ago.
The designer sourced most of her raw materials in her country.

Long Deel tunics were re-designed in vinyls, metallics or super bright satin. Elements of the traditional garment were also updated as a fitted dress with the sleeves opened in cape-like silhouettes. Sashes were re-interpreted into various obi-like or corset shaped fashion pieces in their own right. Fur, as a staple of Mongolian dressing (it gets cold there!), was used in all sorts of placements as an accent, from cuffs and plackets to luxurious collars with an Old Hollywood look. Knotted trims and contrast borders would be placed in unusual placements or seamed t flatter curves on the body.

I have seen Nomad-inspired beaded hairpieces and silver medallion hair accessories on several runways, but the MONGOL runway had the most elaborate. The same beaded techniques were also used in belts. Mongolian jewelry in cuffs and earrings were also styled with the clothes.
Congratulations to Bayarmaa Bayarkhuu for showing us where Mongolian fashion can take us. Good luck and I hope to see more!

Libertine Fall 2015 - Fur and Pop Art

libertine fall 2015
libertine fashion show

Contemporary art meets the runway at Johnson Hartig’s fall 2015 fashion show. He has been known to collaborate with the leading modern artists of our time like Damien Hirst, but also working design projects in mass market for Target and Converse.

Libertine’s Johnson Hartig didn't resist temptation. He pursued it.

Ok, so that’s a poor paraphrase of the tagline from the 2004 film The Libertine. Looking at the designer’s social media accounts, he’s often pursuing adventures across the world. He looks like he is more of a vagabond artist than your traditional apparel entrepreneur. Each outfit on the runway looked like it was pieced together like an art-school collage ( many of his early collections, they were). There are more traditional garments with retro 1960's to 1980s silhouettes that are further embellished with patches, or embroidery, artwork or prints like they were disrupted by an anarchist.

pop art fashion
photos by David TW Leung
Fall 2015 of Libertine had some luxurious upgrades. My favorites were the brightly colored mink or fur coats. Dresses and outerwear had embroidered motifs and text to mirror contemporary canvases that I have seen at the MOMA. Other tributes to modern artists included Jeff Koon's balloon dogs, skull faces from The Misfits, Marcel Duchamp's Mona Lisa satire LHOOQ, Andy Warhol's Campbell Soup Cans to name a few. Some childhood pop culture references included the big blue Bumble monster from the Rudolf Christmas special, and the terrific red telephone purse was a nod to an item in his childhood home.

The makeup had the pale, super smoky eye that looked like they were styled by Living Dead Dolls. The hair was slicked and parted down the middle with a contrast pop color down the middle part.

I love that someone still brings an artsy, edgy punk vibe to the established vibe of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The pricing and the stores who carry this collection may not reflect that, but I like Libertine's attitude all the same.

Byron Lars Fall 2015 Look Book

byron lars fall 2015
byron lars designer
Divine design. The fall 2015 collection of Byron Lars did not have a specific concept at the beginning of the development. Byron had a goal of adding in pieces to his line that were more relaxed, comfortable enough for a woman to throw on quickly for work or home. He started with his wall of trims, textures, and colors and let the collection grow organically. I was on hand assisting in the lookbook photo shoot and snapped a few pics of my own to show you.

Byron Lars is a master of structured stretchy sexy:

The result is one of my favorite collections ever. You have to remember that each Byron Lars garment is a masterpiece in construction, seaming, and internal structure. This means that "simple" in his book is still anything but. There were some very pretty sweater tops with a twisted draped shoulder with tonal contrast trim that could be a very special replacement for a tee. A tunic alternative might be a shaped top with a high-low hem, artisan embroidery and fabrics sourced from three countries. As an option for a legging, there are super soft, stretchy seamed moto pants with trapunto stitching and hip panels to really shape and flatter your back assets.

There was a collection of ultra suede that was softer than any fleece I have ever felt and light enough that it draped like a silk charmeuse. I am so frustrated that I have to wait another six months to get my hands on these. They feel more comfortable than pajamas, but the draped blouses and twist front dress look like the most shapely hourglass pieces imaginable. There was a more rustic group that combined Native American patterns, South American textiles, faux fur and rugged trims but were interpreted into very tailored, elegant silhouettes.

The romantic brocade coat dress up top is a fantastic look for an offbeat bride. PR director Sheila Gray has already claimed that as her wedding dress. With most Byron Lars looks, there is a bit of irony. The flared coat dress has a more industrial gunmetal patent belt to keep it from being too sweet. The glamour makeup was done by Kenecia Lashae of Passport 2 Pretty. The retro chic 1940's hair was by Julie.

This collection was built for curves. Byron Lars chooses fabrics with a lot of structure, but a little stretch. He designs the seam lines to accentuate or support curves. This is definitely a collection that celebrates bodies that are generally underserved by other designers. He is also looking to develop a sultry full figured line to further serve his fans. I have to say that to see his clothes on a hanger or photos do NOT do them justice. They really need to be tried on and twirled around in to appreciate them (trust me, I do that more than I care to admit).

Here's my behind-the-scenes video at the Byron Lars Fall 2015 Lookbook shoot:

Men's and Women's Fragrance Launches for Spring

Someone smells good. I was able to enjoy several fragrance launches in the last month to coincide with fashion week events. Tommy Bahama unveiled both a men's and women's Island Life fragrance at an intimate event that took us out of the winter and gave us the beach.

They had a paddle boarding simulator for us snow-bound fans to practice surfboard skills. A sand castle artist created fanciful structures to perch the fragrances on top of. Guests sipped orchid topped fruity rum drinks. Fellow writers & my Aussie peep Brian all agreed that the Tommy Bahama Island Life for Him cologne was our favorite of the two. It had a clean, light, spicy scent. The bottle had a rattan design to emulate a posh beach villa. The women's fragrance had more of a fruity, floral scent. I loved the hammered gold topper and ridged glass bottle that looked like shutters on a beach house.

A very different aesthetic was presented by Issey Miyake City Blossom. This was a launch that collaborated with Parisian street artist Mademoiselle Maurice.  The artist created intricate origami installations at the boutiques in each of their launch cities to show man-made flowers blooming in all the urban centers. Quite a trip away from the tropical oasis of the scents above.

My L'eau d'Issey perfume was the fragrance of my 1990's. I enjoyed testing out their update which had a similar spire shaped bottle to the 90's original. It had notes of the former, but with a bit more edge with cedar and pink peppercorn, freesia and magnolia.

So much of a scent's identity lies within the lifestyle you aspire to. One brand exuded a relaxed paradise away from the urban hustle. The other brand celebrated the art and culture that flourishes in it. Whatever path in life you choose to lead, there is a men's or women's fragrance to let you immerse yourself in it.

Idan Cohen Fall 2015 (and wedding!)

On February 14th, fashion designer Idan Cohen got married to his partner just before their fashion show at New York Fashion Week. The couple lives and works in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The atmosphere was festive as the show started with the announcement of the wedding. What an accomplishment to prepare a show, perform a ceremony, perform a show, and all in such a short time!

The inspiration for this Fall 2015 collection was the woman's body and her power. The first model appeared on the runway like a blue mermaid and then a black mermaid. Delicate pearls embroidered as an embellishment to a nude back or a décolleté, transparency, slits to reveal long legs and even a glittering swimsuit as a mini dress to show the whole body. All these clothes show a veneration of the woman body.

The dresses were in all nuances of pastels, black and white. Idan appears to be talented and creative in the way he invents new cut outs in the low V-necks, on the shoulders or on the back.  As a final touch, the designer adds also a lot of sequins. However if they go well with the feast like confetti at a celebration I personally found it was excessive.

In the end, the designer appeared with his flower girl, both with great smiles and there was so much happiness in the Pavillon of the Lincoln Center!

ETSY Collaboration With American Museum of Natural History

amanda bielskas etsy

The design industry is all about collaborations between brands. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of exploring the collaboration from the American Museum of Natural History with 22 independent designers from Etsy.

Indie designers from Etsy created unique pieces for the museum

The designers specialized in a broad range of mediums. They were chosen for their work that was inspired by natural history. Many of the creators designed a unique item for the collection inspired by a an element of the institution. Jason Lynch of Smidge Co. made gorgeous 3D cards inspired by dinosaur fossils. Molly Goodall made adorable outerwear pieces for children inspired by astronauts and the Rose Center for Earth and Space.

etsy amnh goodall

The best part of my day was the opportunity to visit the museum's Rare Book Room. Some of the designers and I were treated to a peek into rare folios of engraved illustrations of the natural world dating as far back as 1575 from an original Gesner tome. These beautiful publications served as inspiration for Jessica Kertis, who made hand-painted leather pouches inspired by prints found in the books.

A jewelry designer and museum employee Amanda Bielskas Craftology had already spent a lot of time with the rare books. It was a natural fit for her to look at the illustrations of the whale from the book room and the iconic blue whale exhibit as her muse for the necklace she created for the collaboration.

Birds and the ornithology collection was another popular theme for the creators. Brooklyn ReHAB featured illustrations on their pottery. I loved the bird skull soaps from the Bower Studio.

Our natural world has inspired artists since the beginning of time. I loved seeing how the American Museum of Natural History could spur creativity in the makers from my favorite indie designer marketplace. You can find the Etsy designer collaboration online or right at the museum shop.

Tadashi Shoji Fall 2015

white feather dress
tadashi shoji fall 2015
It was all about celebrating the beauty of flight for Tadashi Shoji's Fall 2015 collection. He expressed his love of flight with two running themes throughout the show. Of course, he did this in the most gorgeous way possible at New York Fashion Week.

The first theme was interpreted through the mechanics of airplanes. While it was not obvious, the lovely embellishments of beaded circles and brocade lace represented the gears of an plane. This technique was used to accent necklines, straps, and waistbands or as engineered embroidery on a bodice or as a full-length gown.

The second motif was a bird theme. Cocktail dresses were trimmed with feathers. Shredded organza and fur were manipulated to give the look of wings and feathers on other looks. The most beautiful styles were the embroidered appliques of wings and feathers that curved around the body in different ways. There was even a group of styles that incorporated both the birds and plane gears into elegant brocade.

You had your choice of classic black and white or rich jewel tones of amethyst, emerald, and sapphire. While the collection was sexy in a sophisticated way, the dresses have an appeal for those who have a more modest taste or like more coverage. Other designers who show a lot of skin seem to forget that there is a huge customer base who like to leave more to the imagination.

Whatever your preference, Tadashi Shoji's fashion design for fall is ready to fly and soar.

Kate Spade Fall 2015

Have you met the Fantastic Mr. Fox? Kate Spade's Fall 2015 collection was styled in the quirky chic aesthetic that I  love film director Wes Anderson for.

The overall presentation had rustic elements in wool plaid and fur clutch handbags. There was an artsy element in the Roald Dahl inspired sketches along the walls and whimsical colour palettes. There were Kate Spade's signature feminine (though not girly) accessories of hats and gloves with the candy box handbags. The larger carryall purses were either crocodile embossed leather or color blocked. The starring Mr. Fox was featured a leather applique face on bags and sweaters.

photos by Mariana Leung
The retro styling of the clothes themselves did look like they could fit into a Wes Anderson movie. Skirt lengths were either short or Ladylike A-line past the knee. Sweep Peter Pan collars added to the deceptively demure looks with a modern edge when paired with heeled oxford shoes. The bright pink and floral prints looked like they could fit into a painted movie set or out on the streets.

I love that the Kate Spade brand has continued to keep her tongue-in-cheek attitude throughout the years. While personal style is nothing to joke about, fashion should never be taken too seriously.

Theia Fall 2015 - Exclusive Studio Visit

theia fall 2015
theia art nouveau
I had the honor of visiting designer Don O'Neill to preview the THEIA Fall 2015 collection before much of the world. You can be embedded in the photographer's pit, interview backstage, but nothing lets you see a designer's vision as being in their design studio as they work on the collection itself.

Visiting the design space itself, you can see Don's design process. He started with contemporary Irish furniture designer Joseph Walsh. Specifically, his Lumenoria II collection. Walsh's signature aesthetic are his flowing, sinewy organic lines an naturalistic colors. The table below was a piece that Don O'Neill was moved by when he viewed it at The Salon At + Design Show at the New York Armory this past November. The lines in Walsh's work had symmetries with early 20th century Art Nouveau. The art movement was recognizable for its curved design lines and nature motifs that were popular in interior design, art, jewelry, you name it. Don incorporated all of it in his fall 2015 fashion collection.

joseph walsh design
photos by Mariana Leung
You can see the elegant curved lines in both the dress silhouettes and embroidery design. He tweaked the classic art nouveau dragonfly motif into a more modern butterfly beading. There is a nod to Tiffany glass in his "liquid glass" fabrication.

The sweeping shapes are incredibly flattering on yes, the "average" woman. It may be hard to believe, but I have always been impressed at how much Don takes (real) customer feedback into consideration when he designs THEIA. The style lines are flattering to the curves of the body. They are often "bra-friendly" or have built in fabric construction to give women some extra support in their shape. He adds little touches like shirring in strategic places just in case you (not just hungry celebrities) some breathing room at their next gala. Just in case you were wondering though, that leather halter dress on the left? Yes, Idina Menzel (aka Adele Dazeem) wore that at the Academy Awards last week.

I love seeing a designer and artist at work. Double bonus when THEIA's fashion collection is one that is attainable and one I can picture myself in for a glamorous occasion. Don O'Neill does it again!
