Badgley Mischka Fall 2015 - Matadors

No bull here. Mark Badgley and James Mischka tapped into a classic fashion designer inspiration of the Spanish matador for their fall 2015 collection for Badgley Mischka. Balenciaga did it, Givenchy did recently (remember Madonna's thong from the Grammy's?)

For this collection, the inspiration wasn't quite so literal. There were a few bright red wool pieces that might have had a matador's cape as a muse. The golden metallic embroidery that was built up around bodices and shoulders mixed with deep red, brown and earthy colors might have taken its inspiration from the embellishment of matador costumes. There was tinted lace in some of the dresses that hinted at the lace accessories worn by Spanish women in the church in centuries past.

Otherwise, the dress silhouettes followed many of Badgley Mischka's signature shapes of the long fishtail gown, corseted trumpet skirt and form fitting column dress. Looks that were more suited to day wear included tailored blazers and skirts from beautiful tweeds or brocades that resembled Spanish tapestries.

I loved the tall bouffant half updo hairstyles on the models. The sexy cat's eye makeup had shades of Amy Winehouse as a muse. The nails were embellished metallic gold to match the gorgeous embroidery. I am really happy to see that the designers did not feel the need to add a bullfighter's montera hat as an accessory to get their theme across.

There were elegant little clutch handbags that coordinated well with the clothing. Some were beaded, some had chunky jewels. I loved the embroidered cuffs with organza that were worn on the wrist as a bracelet alternative. I think I need to make some of those for myself...
Badgley Mischka celebrated their 25th anniversary as a brand last season and the guys have been in an even longer relationship as a couple. I'm amazed that two people can have such a long run at work and play and still produce good things year after year.  Maybe they can add relationship counselling as the next extension of their brand.

#NYFW Anna Sui Fall 2015

viking fashion
anna sui nyfw

The Vikings are coming! For fall 2015, fashion designer Anna Sui took inspiration from Nordic culture and interior design. You see contemporary bold prints in the style of Marimekko. You see layered textures of knit, fur, and patterns upon pattern to give the Viking look a contemporary update. Who knew Hagar the Horrible was a fashion icon?

As with every season, that theme was mixed with Sui's bohemian and rock and roll aesthetic. Her signature purple is always there. Her flea market sensibility is always there. While I haven't always liked her collection, this one was a lot of fun with several outfits I would actually want.

Anna Sui for me always embodied the club kid of the 1990s, but like myself, we all had to grow up. Her look maintains the fun sense to please her diehard fans overseas but matured with more versatile pieces for fans that grew with her. She even just launched a home collection for fans who want to live her lifestyle all day and all night. I wonder if that includes a couch shaped like a Viking boat?

#NYFW Zang Toi Fall 2015

zang toi fw15
zang toi ny fashion week

How about a journey to somewhere romantic? For his fall 2015 collection at New York Fashion Week, designer Zang Toi took his fans to Venice. He traveled to the Italian city to immerse himself in his inspiration. The soundtrack was full of opera. The fabrics were the most luxurious cashmeres from Loro Piana, silks, and Fortuny-style pleated metallics.

The day looks involved impeccably tailored suits and fitted sheath dresses. The transition from day into evening was indicated with a briefly darkened runway like  the second act of a theater production. For regular Zang Toi fans, you know to get ready to gasp. Of course, he did not disappoint.

Zang Toi gave us a Venetian-themed fashion collection

Zang Toi's seasoned models know to take their time and truly show the beauty of the outfit they are wearing. Whether that is to swing a precious fur stole around the shoulders or to fan out a full cape or arch the body show highlight a dress silhouette, the artistry in modeling comes out on this runway.

Ms. Fabulous contributor Elaine Fioravanti always looks to Zoya's nail polish collection in the gift bags as the teaser for the season. The organic nail lacquer company offered up colors that reflected the key hues of Zang Toi's show in champagne, copper and black. (The designer joked that he was really calling this season "50 Shades of Bronze" backstage).

Wherever I sit during a Zang Toi show, I am convinced I am among his biggest fans. In the audience, fashion fans practically swooned when an intricately beaded silk cape depicting a Venetian city scene. When I am with fellow photographers, I hear them yelling "Yesss, Yesss!" every time a model takes a dramatic turn in a stunning gown. The photographer's pit is generally a stoic lot, but they gush about how Mr. Toi has the perfect lighting, feeds the shooters and casts the best models.

It's rare that someone in his position has managed to generate such good will among so many segments of the industry. His staff seem fiercely protective of him, have stayed with him for years, but the most helpful for those who make an inquiry. Even former staff have only great things to say about him.

Once again, fashion designer Zang Toi has managed to elevate the New York Fashion Week experience for everyone involved. The beauty of his collection makes all the crowds, waiting, sweating and previous egos worth it.

#AskHerMore Academy Awards Red Carpet 2015

reese witherspoon tom ford

As a fashion enthusiast, I have always written about my favorites on the red carpet from my perspective as a designer. Having your gown worn and name mentioned on-air does tremendous things for the livelihood of a label. It never occurred to me that doing so might be diminishing the accomplishments of the person wearing the fashion. Reese Witherspoon was one of the top supporters of  the #AskHerMore campaign. This was social media campaign that challenged reporters to ask actresses more compelling questions on the red carpet rather than reducing them to the mani-cam and dress details. She told journalist Robin Roberts “This is a movement to say we’re more than just our dresses. There are 44 nominees this year that are women and we are so happy to be here and talk about the work that we’ve done. It’s hard being a woman in Hollywood or any industry.”  For tradition's sake, Reese wore a Tom Ford contrast dress that the E Network cast called "mind-blowing".

Watching the E Network's red carpet coverage, I did not have a lot of hope for the campaign to work out. Things looked especially dire when Ryan Seacrest expressed that he couldn't wait to ask Dakota Johnson what prop she took home from 50 Shades of Grey like he had spent all night coming up with that question. (Perhaps it's not the sexism of the reporter, but the lack of intelligence in forming the questions that are the problem).

julianne moore oscars 2015

Fear not, this award season saw actresses taking charge to get their message across anyway. Julianne Moore made a compelling statement about what she learned about Alzheimer's disease while researching her Oscar-winning role in Still Alice. “There’s this misnomer that dementia or Alzheimer’s is a normal condition of aging, and it’s not. It’s a disease-- and a disease without any treatment or cure. It’s the sixth leading cause of death.”  For the record, Julianne Moore wore a beautifully embroidered custom Chanel gown by Karl Lagerfeld (I actually did geek out over this dress, I won't lie).
Best Supporting Actress award winner Patricia Arquette's acceptance speech got Meryl Streep to stand up and roar when she declared "It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America." Ms. Arquette's dress was created by her close friend Rosetta Getty

So there, you have it. You can be a fan of the fashions at the Academy Awards red carpet without having it define the people wearing them. Was this really a big problem with the media? How about asking intelligent questions and just adding designer tags on the screen? I think that's a win-win situation.

Academy Award Party Tips with M&MS

It’s the Academy Awards again! Admit it, how many of you think the real winners are on the red carpet instead of picking up the statue? I have been hosting Oscar parties the last few years now. The best events have lots of treats and a lot of styles. An easy treat to celebrate American cinema is the classic candy of M&M’S. I use them to bring color and texture to desserts. You can totally pair them with your outfit or movie theme.

If you are walking your own red carpet, make sure to wear a color that flatters you. If you can’t do a custom gown, the key to making a dress look expensive is one that fits you well. One of my all-time favorite looks was Viola Davis at the 2012 Academy Awards wearing a custom green Vera Wang gown. This dress looked so great on her because it worked with her skin tone and the bodice highlighted her face. Just for fun, I re-interpreted this look with the famous Green M&M’S.

I also made boozy chocolate cupcakes. I used chocolate liqueur, which gives the cake a moist texture and chocolate buttercream. I topped it with a crispy M&M to match Viola’s dress. Have fun with the recipe:

Chocolate Liqueur Cupcakes: (Makes 12)

3 oz.  High-quality dark chocolate chopped into small pieces
1/3 cup Dutch processed cocoa powder
3/4 cup brewed espresso
3/4 cup bread flour
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
6 tablespoons butter
2 eggs, room temperature
2 teaspoons Chocolate Liqueur
1 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line cupcake tin with the paper cup liners (I like the foil ones for glam events).
Pour hot espresso over a large bowl of the chopped chocolate and cocoa powder. Whisk until smooth. Refrigerate for 20 minutes.
In a separate bowl, whisk together your flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda. Set aside the bowl.
Whisk the oil, eggs, vinegar and vanilla into the cooled chocolate until the mixture looks smooth. Add the flour mixture and whisk until smooth.
Divide the batter evenly into the cupcake tins. Bake for approximately 17-19 minutes, until just firm to the touch. Cool on rack for 10 minutes, and then remove cupcakes from pan to cool completely.

Chocolate Liqueur Buttercream

1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
1 to 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 to 3 tablespoons Chocolate Liqueur

Cream the butter with an electric mixer. Add 1 cup of confectioners’ sugar and cocoa powder. Mix until combined. Add chocolate liqueur. Mix at high speed until light and fluffy, adding more sugar and/or liqueur until desired consistency is reached. Add your buttercream to a piping bag (I like to add a star tip) and frost.

Top with a crispy M&M for crunch!

To make your guests feel like VIPs, make sure you have good lighting. An inexpensive flood light in a flattering hue or even lots of tea lights can make that happen. If you have a screen (or sheet) you can project the Academy Awards onto, it looks very impressive.

If  you need more tips for impressing on the red carpet, these little guys can help you out. What are your favorite tips for hosting an Oscars party?

#NYFW Art Hearts Fashion - Michael Costello Fall 2015

alien model nyfw
If you're the last designer and last fashion show to close out the Lincoln Center era of New York Fashion Week, go out with a bang. Michael Costello and Stephanie Costello did just that last night for the finale of the Art Hearts Fashion presentation for AIDS Awareness.

Most people will talk about the naked male model, Laurent Marchand. Perhaps they might talk about a fabulous "V" like reveal of the model to lizard alien face (spectacular makeup on that one BTW). If that's all people talk about though, that would be a shame. I first saw these gimmicks as just that, something that a lesser talent would pull just for the sake of publicity. Then I read the designer's statement of how this collection was "inspired by the daring, outspoken and misbehaved". Also, "centralized around the unconventional, & challenging boundaries". Now it makes more sense.

michael costello fall 2015

The rest of the runway was indeed very sexy, but it had a lot of gorgeous looks too. Definitely figure-hugging and not for the timid. The Project Runway alum has already shown more growth from his spring show. I still think his collection is begging for some high drama pop divas to showcase them properly on stage. Now that he has the world's attention, I hope Michael Costello can focus on pure, fashion design with the distractions. They are showstoppers in their own right.

#NYFW: Mark & Estel Fall 2015

When Mark & Estel show started I was wondering how their rock star would look on the runway this Fall 2015. This collection "Stairways to the stars" is for the duo Estel Day and Mark Tango a continuation of the saga, their fourth collection at New York Fashion Week. They wanted to create a kind of "royal" collection because they believe that everybody can be royal!

I liked this fashion show, its energy. It started with the very first model  while the song "she's dancing" was playing.

On the runway, there was a combination of leather and plaid. The Californian designers have reinvented plaid so that instead of being the standard thick fabric it was thinner with some transparency at times. Plaid brings colors to the looks, mainly a flamboyant red giving the models a fierce attitude. A red perfect for Valentine's Day! There were also colors also on hosiery. Colors constitute a nice addition in comparison with previous collections where black & white were dominant.

I noticed a trend in several shows regarding socks: wearing them with dresses and here too with dresses we could see socks with platforms.

The designers have used a lot of silk and wool with printed pattern and actually they even launched printed fabrics by Mark & Estel as well as hosiery and silk chiffon scarves.

The Finale was indeed royal! Mark & Estel performed the song "Stairway to the stars" and rocked the Lincoln Center. You can feel that they especially love that moment of the show. What a contrast with all the other designers who make the shortest possible appearance, often looking shy and clumsy. Mark & Estel own the catwalk/stage and really sing or shout to the photographers and the audience. It seems that they wish the audience in New York were more rock 'n' roll. To conclude, they screamed "You're a fashion rock star"!

#NYFW: Vivienne Tam Fall 2015

vivienne tam fw15
vivienne tam fall 2015

Happy Chinese new year!  Vivienne Tam's Fall 2015 collection brought the opulence of Chinoiserie as seen through the eyes of Europeans when they first encountered Asian culture. So what exactly does that mean?
You see high-necked silhouettes popular in the Victorian era. Nature illustrations were popular in the 1700's and 1800's in Europe. In this collection, there was a fusion of those illustrations mixed with traditional Chinese motifs of cranes and cherry blossoms in  beautiful prints on the fabric (always loved Vivienne Tam prints).

photos by Mariana Leung
The sexiest looks were the cocktail length dresses with A-line skirt with the bodice framed in lace applique. The lace motifs echoed baroque furniture lines popular in the Victoria era. The other Asian Euro fusion combo? Grey wooly tartans were paired with soft silk printed dresses. Proper British peacoats were a part of more tailored looks.

Vivienne Tam continued her use of high tech fabrics like power mesh and neoprene to execute classical cultural motifs. I have always loved her aesthetic of taking traditional elements of her heritage and breaking them out to contemporary pop art fashion trends.

Now, if I get enough red envelopes today, Vivienne Tam's boutique is where I will be spending them!

#NYFW: Carolina Herrera Fall 2015

American fashion icon Carolina Herrera had the most fluid collection this season. By that I mean that theme of fall 2015 was water. Her runway was set up for models to glide in a zig-zag pattern as if they were being pushed along a current.

The breathtaking gowns had a combination of hand painted patterns of rippling water. There were prints of cresting waves.  Flowing waves were embroidered in contrast patterns or three-dimensional techniques. Some looks had prints of a flowing river embellished with metallic pebbles that looked like they were floating on top. There were fabric strips applied to some outfits that gave a three-dimensional effect of water running through the garment as well.

photos by Mariana Leung

Other great embellishments included shredded organza pieces that were folded and applied with a scattered bead and jewels embroidered on a bodice that gave the effect of (expensive) fallen rain sliding off a rooftop. The more whimsical water reference was a pretty variation on a polka dot print that were actually bubbles.

The color palette was very cool, with blue, gray, black and white. However, there were a few pieces with very bold red flowing through the ripples, almost like blood getting into the stream. The red took over for a few looks in edgy crocodile embossed leather.

This was a breathtaking Carolina Herrera fashion collection. I actually heard guests sigh when the evening wear began crossing the floors. Myself? I am just happy that the soundtrack wasn't running water (can you imagine 1600 people running for the NYFW port-a-potties at the same time?)

#NYFW: Son Jung Wan Fall 2015

Korean designer Son Jung Wan was inspired by MGM films of the 1950's with their romantic fantasies.  The classic Hollywood glamour of rich furs and sequins was at play on the runway. There were tailored jackets and demure pointed collars that were embellished. A silver palette of shimmering celadon green, taupe and silver gave way to Technicolor orange and purple.

The outfits were generally long. Long coats, trousers, and long skirts were meant to be ladylike. Lots of metallic fabrics were used to offset the cozy cashmere coats. Matched sets of boxy silhouettes remind me of the looks of Hitchcock heroines. There were a lot of outerwear appropriate looks matched with tailoring fabrics wool herringbone.

While Son Jung Wan may have looked to the past as her muse, her collection took a modern approach to pairing textures and fabric. Her finale gave the cutest moment of NY Fashion Week so far when friend and Gossip Girl actress Kelly Rutherford jumped up and hugged her.

#NYFW: FTL MODA Loving You Fall 2015

The model casting for the FTL MODA show last night wins the award for most bad-ass. The Italian organization that promotes fashion production in Italy worked with London's Models of Diversity to cast physically challenged models for its "Loving You" finale collection. The agency was formed to give opportunities to disabled models all across Europe.

The collective fashion show featured designers from all over the world but were committed to luxury Italian manufacturing. Simply Vermeulen featured gorgeous silk prints. Rozalia Bot featured draped silks and bold floral embroidery. Landi Accessories was a leather bag company, so they sent their collection down the runway using the models as a literal canvas by splashing their bodies with white paint. Antonio Urzi sent out a spectacular metallic, alien-like collection that had hints of Paco Rabanna and Martian uniforms? It's no surprise that Lady Gaga and Rihanna are already clients.

The photographer's pit certainly appreciated the model casting, as amputees and beauties in wheelchairs were sincerely cheered in support. Graceful models who could spin their way around a wheelchair were able to extend shapely legs to show off gorgeous fabric prints. I love that the favorite models were the ones who could really pull off the fierce attitude to match the outfit and wild makeup.

I know that diversity has been a big push this season from the CFDA. So far this season, I can't say that I have seen much improvement as far ethnicity, age or size diversity. I AM happy to see that FTL MODA made a big statement to prove that isn't true for models facing physical challenges. I'm even more gratified to see this isn't the first fashion show where I have seen models of this demographic.  The VAWK show in Toronto, blogger Jillian Mercado starring in Diesel ads and AHS star Jamie Brewer making her debut at NYFW are a part of what I hope isn't merely a trend.

This was the hottest ticket of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Naomi Campbell's Fashion For Relief event last night at Lincoln Center brought out the top celebrities of music, fashion and entertainment to raise money for Ebola Survival Fund.

The supermodel strutted her famous walk down the runway herself multiple times, along with actresses like Rosario Dawson, Michelle Rodriguez, socialite Paris Hilton, fashion police squad Kelly Osbourne and Brad Goreski, stylist June Ambrose and editor Joe Zee. Diva Mary J. Blige was in full glamour along with actor Bryshere Y. Gray from Empire came out with Naomi Campbell for the finale. Guests in the audience included Justin Beiber. There was live music and a silent auction making this show the best party of the night.

Designers who lent their clothes and time for this event included everyone from Diane Von Furstenberg, Proenza Schouler, Marc Jacobs, Emilio Pucci, Givenchy, Roberto Cavalli, Calvin Klein and Thom Browne.

New York Fashion Week can be exhausting. It was a lot of fun to see this many creative people using their fame to collaborate on a fashion event for a good cause. Thank you, Naomi Campbell for Fashion For Relief at New York Fashion Week

#NYFW: Mara Hoffman Fall 2015

Is Star Wars the most popular franchise in the history of pop culture? How do you do a mashup of this with a down-to-earth designer with a love of desert prints? Mara Hoffman and her creative team were able to reference the galaxy far far away for her fall 2015 collection with simple tricks of styling.

The backdrop to the runway looked like any other desert sunset, except it was a scene of Tatooine's twin moons from the Star Wars films. The soundtrack opened with the recognizable musical notes of the Star Wars theme. However, the clothing itself? There was not one piece that had an obvious reference to the movies.

There were a lot of cozy wraps and ponchos. The stylist did wrap the pieces in a way that resembled Natalie Portman's Padme character in one of the films. What really took it to the space fantasy level? The epic braided hairstyles on the models. The models hair was a variation of loose crown braid and twin braids down the back, a look I predict will spread across the style set (starting with myself).

The woven patterns and prints within the collection had  Native American or desert references. Long legged rompers were layered with cocoon-like coats. There several knits in a subdued warm grey color which was a departure for Mara Hoffman. Necklaces were often arched with fringe hanging below.

I liked the sophisticated turn the Mara Hoffman Fall 2015 collection. It had me daydreaming of warmer weather or just somewhere with sand, not snow. Another person who is growing up nicely? Ms. Hoffman junior who was sporting an outfit that coordinated with her mothers' dress as she offered her a Valentine's Day rose.

#NYFW Monique Lhuillier Fall 2015

monique lhuillier nyfw fw15
No one keeps new school Hollywood looking like old school glamour than Monique Lhuillier. Her fall 2015 collection at New York fashion week show had rich jewel tones in flowing silk charmeuse, lace and beading.

While each style looked contemporary, the artfully draped silk or high-necked lace made the models look equally as comfortable in silver screens of decades past. A pale fur coat was beautifully beaded with jewels. Artful lace was appliqued in flattering lines around the body. The dresses and jackets are destined for many a red carpet (and have likely already worn to award shows this year). The model's hair was blown sleek and straight, off to the side. Some wore their hair back in a ponytail so it wouldn't interfere with a detailed neck area.

photos by Mariana Leung
I was backstage watching her design staff sew last minute additions and steaming out long silk georgette looks. Back in my early design days, I remember those up-all-night prep sessions only to have to refit again when your model was switched out at the last minute.

The set-up of this show was unusual. Half of the venue was empty (which mean half the number of guests would be accommodated). Instead, the empty risers acted as a staggered platform for models to pose on after they completed their catwalk strut. At first, I couldn't figure out why they would waste precious seats. I realized at the end of the show, the models walked forward and posed again directly in front of the guests seats in a long pause. This allowed key editors to really examine the clothing details. This also gave guests with only a phone a chance to capture their own images.

Overall, this was a gorgeous collection by Monique Lhuillier. I found every look wearable for a truly sophisticated occasion.

#NYFW: Go Red For Women - Red Dress Show 2015

laverne cox marc bouwer
If you loved a celebrity packed fashion show with a message, it doesn't get better than the Red Dress Collection. The Go Red For Women campaign brought together a stellar group of fashion designers and paired them with accomplished women who care about heart health.

What moves me about this particular fashion show is that everyone participating truly believes in the cause. Statements about how each celebrity was touched by heart disease was posted behind them on the catwalk. Rosie O'Donnell opened the show with a hilarious speech but then gave us a whammy of intimate details of her heart attack experience. I learned that heart attacks occur with 1 in 3 women and that we don't get the same symptoms (or any) as men before one happens. She developed the acronym HEPPP for women to remember for signs of heart trouble (see bottom of the post for definition).

Stars included Orange is the New Black's Laverne Cox in Donna Karan. Hoda Kotb in Romona Keveza,. singer Ciara wearing Safiyaa, pop star Thalia wearing Shady ZeinEldine and YouTube star Bethany Mota wearing Badgley Mischka and Real Housewife Cynthia Bailey wore Jovan O'Connor. Dascha Polanco really vamped it up in Old Hollywood style wearing Michael Costello.

Want more? How about Zendaya wearing Rubin Singer. The Chew's Carla Hall wearing Evgenia    and Barbara Eden, everyone's favorite genie looking magical as ever in Carmen Marc Valvo.  Guests were aso treated to a performance by Fifth Harmony.

So here's what you need to learn about monitoring your own heart health and those your love. If you have these signs, seek medical help immediately. Rosie O'Donnell broke it down:
