Wizard of Oz - Leading Ladies Re-Imagined

wicked witch fashion
oz witch fashion doll
No, this isn't Kansas.  Warner Brothers and Tonner Dolls have combined forces with 20 fashion designers to create one-of-a-kind dolls to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Wizard of Oz movie.  Designers like Reem Acra, Betsey Johnson, Chris Benz, Byron Lars, Donna Karan, Jenny Packham  and Colleen Atwood to name a few, sketched and created couture ensembles for the collectible Tonner Dolls.

Above are a few preview sketches from different designers.  They were tasked with re-imagining the characters of Glinda the Good Witch, The Wicked Witch and of course, Dorothy herself.  Byron Lars re-imagined a post-apocalyptic Dorothy who has been hardened by the loss of her dog and fighting it out against the world.   Yours truly contributed the graphic designs for the tattoo and t-shirt to this doll.

Reem Acra re-designed Dorothy's classic gingham ensemble as an elegant ballgown.  Carmen Marc Valvo gave Glinda a modern red carpet makeover. Betsey Johnson interpreted Glenda as a punk godmother, eerily similar to herself.  Lyn Paolo (top) saw the Wicked Width as a vintage vamp.  Douglas Hannant saw the sorceress as sexy screen siren in fur.  Watching the process, I can tell you that Tonner Dolls handpainted the facial features onto each doll (they definitely don't mass manufacture the fierce attitude I saw on the Byron Lars doll!)  Each designer was responsible for making the unique outfit that the doll wore.

The actual dolls will be unveiled at the Fashion Institute of Technology to coincide with NY Fashion Week.  The dolls will be up for auction to benefit Habit for Humanity as part of their "There's No Place Like Home" campaign. Habitat for Humanity is an organization whose mission is to build decent, affordable homes for low income families around the world.

I know I personally fantasized about Dorothy's flared blue gingham dress and the big pink pile of organza that was Glinda's ballgown when I watched the movie as a child.  You can see it inspired plenty of other fashion creators like myself.  The fact that it brought so many of them together for a great cause is that much more beautiful.   I can only hope they present them on a giant yellow brick runway...

Siempre Mujer Shoot with Genesis Rodriguez

Are you fan of bridal or embellishment design?  If you are not familiar with my side project, Weng Meng Design Studio, I create one-of-a-kind pieces based on my artisan embroidery designs.  Earlier this summer, a cool stylist by the name of Carlos Franqui contacted me after seeing my feather capelets on my Etsy shop.

He was working on a fabulous white fashion story for a cover shoot for leading Latin magazine, Siempre Mujer.  The gorgeous actress Genesis Rodriguez was starring in this photo spread.  He said a white falcon would be the co-star and wanted a dramatic feather creation to accompany it.  Of course, I was out of town at the time and pulled an all-nighter the day before to make this happen.

I layered long and medium length white feathers and stitched several rows of stitches to keep them
together on a base of soft tulle.  I used the natural curve of the feathers for shape.  I used shorter feathers for the collar area.  I added short, burnt coque feathers as accent.    I further used silk charmeuse to face the area where the ends of the feather shafts met to protect the wearer (very important when designing with feathers!)  I was really happy with the final product.

Let me tell you… All-nighters when you are 19 are very different from where I am now.  After I came home from the photo shoot, I crashed out with my head on the couch, body on an ottoman and a cat sprawled on my chest.

The team at the photo shoot were terrific.  I hung out and helped with the set up for a bit to watch the stylists and photographers in action.  I absolutely loved the final result!

Best of Emmy's Red Carpet - The Angels

The most talented actresses of the small screen were celebrated at the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.  The hottest trend on the red carpet? Bright glittering angels in platinum and white.

As a curvy girl myself, I love seeing gowns that sculpt and highlight great curves in an unusual way.  Kate Mara's J. Mendel gown had multi-directional shirring along with shaped, semi-sheer layers to reveal the leg in a soft way.  Also loved the chunky beading on the top.  Sofia Vergara's hourglass figure is always epic on the red carpet.  Roberto Cavalli's gown not only hugged her body, but the silver embroidered lines traced each sexy shape even more.  Danielle Brooks of Orange is the New Black wore a Nathaniel Paul gown with a great circle lace bodice.  It contrasted beautifully against her skin.  The asymmetrical skirt with high leg slit was incredibly flattering.

I loved these shimmering dresses.  Amy Poehler was stunning in THEIA's silver beaded gown.  Hayden Pannetiere made every Mom I know jealous in a starburst embroidered gown by Lorena Sarbu.  Taylor Schilling's halter gown had beautiful beaded lines by Zuhair Murad.

Lucy Liu's gown from Zac Posen pulled shirring details in several directions to frame her body.  Julianna Hough's strapless dress was a contemporary take on the retro big bow dress by DSquared.  Dascha Polanco was in full diva mode in a ballgown by Johanna Johnson.

#MYNY - DKNY Launches Fragrance With a Party in the Park

dkny myny perfume

Pop star Rita Ora, supermodel Chrissy Teigen and other celebrities were on hand to dish out heart shaped pretzels from Cronut King Dominic Ansel.   It was one giant party in Madison Square Park with a DJ, treats and the newest sweet scent from DKNY.

The Donna Karan brand has always professed their love for the city of New York in their advertising and their location in the heart of Manhattan.  This campaign takes that idea quite literally.  The digital heart motif was splashed everywhere.  The heart shaped bottle has a top inspired by the architecture of the city.

The scent itself? It has notes of raspberry, pink peppercorn, vanilla and freesia.  Other notes include thing I have never heard of, like roots of orris? (It is an herbal medicine ingredient).  The overall impression was a mix of aromas of what experts called "gourmand" scents at a fragrance seminar I went to and bohemian elements like patchouli and jasmine.

Well, considering the smell of NYC in the summer is often not pleasant, I have no objection to this perfume taking over Gotham.

Create your own #MYNY heart on their website.

How to Rock Transitional Style with Skirts Online

All right, we have hit that time of year of transitional dressing.  Fall and winter clothes have hit the stores while summer temperatures occur outside for another month.  How do you bridge that gap in seasonal style?

Tip #1: Black and white was a big trend at both the spring and fall collections.  Pairing textures and graphic patterns work all year round.  Stripes, geometric and ethnic prints I found all over the runways the past year.  Stretch your wardrobe with a solid black or solid white bottom to anchor any design up top.

Tip #2: You can’t go wrong with a skirt!  Skirts work with warmer weather or layered for cooler temperatures.  I found a huge selection of skirts online from Metalicus, a popular fashion site from Australia. It was full of flattering silhouettes that work year-round.  My favorite is the shirred, wrap Marlini style skirt in the middle.  It has an elegant drape that looks sexy on all figures.  It is easily paired with a striped or patterned top or a matching black one for a sleek look.  A longer, full skirt like the Kahlo skirt on the left is breezy in the summer with a tank top or winter-worthy with a sexy sweater.

Tip #3: Stretchy, comfy fabric.  Adapting to different climates or occasions is all about layers.  The Metalicus signature look is about fabrics that are flexible for active lifestyles.  Look for knit jerseys for a draped, flowing, or body conscious look.  Ponti fabrics give a big more structure but still have stretch.  A sleeveless dress or top paired with a pencil skirt is comfortable in the summer.  Throw a jacket or cardigan over the outfit and you have a fall look as well.

What is your best tip for transitioning through the seasons?

#MENSWEAR: Dr. Martens Spirit of '69

trojan records box

doc martens 69
The iconic Doc Martens boot brand celebrated the “Spirit of ‘69” last night on the Lower East Side.  In its latest campaign, British rapper Mike Skinner and photographer Gavin Watson have evoked the rebellious spirit, music and skinhead culture of 1960’s that made the brand the punk fashion icon it is today.  Dr. Marten’s also collaborated with brands like Trojan RecordsAlpha Jackets, Brutus Shirts and Edwin Jeans that they felt also contributed to the culture of that time.

While Dr. Martens was traditionally made in the U.K. did you know there really was a “Doc”?  Dr. Klaus Maertens was a German inventor who originally created the label’s signature air sole to relieve the pain of his own injured foot.  The original work boots were worn by policemen and postmen. Certain styles are still being made in the original Cobbs Lane factory in England where they started in 1901.

The party was held at the three floor nightclub at The Delancey.  The palm tree filled rooftop and faux-grungy basement floors make it one of the clubs where you can still enjoy a variety punk, rock and reggae on the Lower East Side of NYC.  This was a fitting location for guests to dance to their choice of music and throw back a Red Stripe beer or Sailor Jerry.

New York was once a great place for rock n’ roll.  Based on the number of guests last night, there was no shortage of fans for the genre.  Rockers need to pull on their boots and stomp their way back to New York. Win your own pair of Dr. Marten's by showing your style here.

#Menswear: Stronghold Denim: America's Heritage

handmade jeans
selvage jeans
abbot kinney shopping

Do your jeans have history? I came across Stronghold Denim's gorgeous store in Venice Beach, California.   Walking into their space in the chic shopping street of Abbot Kinney Boulevard was like a trip back in time.

Stronghold was the first denim company to produce and Manufacture in Los Angeles.   They date back to 1895.  They supplied authentic work wear for those early consumers.  In the 1930's, you saw Stronghold jeans in movies like The Grapes of Wrath and Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times.  The company closed in 1949.

Fast forward to 2004, entrepreneurs Michael Paradise and Michael Cassell took over the historical brand to revive the tradition of handmade craftsmanship.  The store has beautifully made hats, belts and of course jeans.  Old wooden display cases and jars of metal hardware serve as decor.  The jeans use old school indigo dyes for their fabrics.  If you take a look inside the garments they actually use selvage edge denim, something I have not seen in modern mass manufactured jeans (and I have researched MANY brands as a technical director). Selvage is the finished wrapped edge on finely woven fabrics.  While not necessary and fabric consuming (which is why no one does this anymore) the edge does give a high end look and feel of security at the seams.  These are one of the many details that you may not see from the outside, but if you care for such things, they matter.  It's kind of like having a cashmere lined trench coat sewn with silk thread.

The old folks are right.  In a time where fast, cheap fashion increasingly has taken over the world, I love to see a throwback to real artisan clothing.

#Menswear Schuyler 4 Fall/Winter 2014

Do you need some German engineering in your wardrobe?  I love visiting the Schuyler 4 menswear showroom.  Their luxury men’s sportswear is what I would wear if I were a man.  They represent several heritage brands, Alberto, Haupt and Codice.  They each have been around for generations and hail mostly from Germany.

I always find it interesting that the classic legacy brands are often the ones doing the most innovative things with their product.  I don’t know if that is because they know their category so well, that they are confident enough to take chances?

The Alberto pants have classic construction, but super soft finishes and a great range of dyes.  My husband is a huge fan.  His last pair upgraded his denim wardrobe and he refuses to go back to his old level of jeans.  Their interior finishes are built like a tailored trouser, with silky lining and interesting stitching.

As an outerwear fan myself, the Codice collection has beautifully tailored jackets.  Their fabrics are gorgeous and textured.  I love them more when I see the whimsical contrast linings for that bit of pop color.

The Haupt shirts have these tiny little details that make them stand out.  It could be the tiny pipings around the cuff, a contrast collar.  It could be more obvious, like a photo collage print of rock icons.

All these brands have a distinct European flavor, giving a masculine look of high fashion, but without being flamboyant.   Gentleman, if you miss your appointment at Savile Row, let the continent come to you.

#Menswear Nautica Fall 2014

nautica black sail
nautica fall 2014
Did Nautica’s Black Sail Fall 2014 collection finally find its identity? I’m kicking off my menswear week coverage with one of my career alma maters.

For many years, Nautica did not seem to know where it wanted to be in the market place after VF Corporation took the brand over from David Chu. While I was employed there, there were efforts to make it preppy and sophisticated.  It dabbled in the more urban aesthetic towards what their expensive (but inconclusive) market research told them. Should the brand stay true the nautical theme?  Did it really boil down to Father’s Day promotions at Federated owned department stores?

Their fall 2014 collection might have found their way. Branding the show under the “Black Sail” heading was smart in signaling a different intention without alienating the traditional buyers.  The outerwear offerings, one of the brand’s strongest products, had a great lineup of high-tech puffers.  Even working with the design team, I always loved all their little details, functional and design alike.  The fur collars had a bit of luxury, the sleek surfaces gave the fabrics more of an edge.  There were a lot of cozy knits, a category that was always under promoted for Nautica. They had a good balance of sporty and outdoors-influenced looks (the frozen forest prints rocks). The slimmer fits of the tops and pants worked well for the city guy who works for the weekend.

I love the diverse model casting; Design director Christopher Cox always had a good eye for models.  I remember in the early days, the merchandisers always observed that the bestselling colors for the masses were red, navy and yellow. It doesn’t sound very sophisticated, and the majority of those dollars might have come from the off-price channels. However, those colors were worked into the fall 2014 show in a sophisticated way in richer, darker hues and better fabrics in pop colors.

Here’s to Ms. Fabulous giving a shout-out to my peeps.  You all deserve a bonus.

Aritizia Holiday 2014

What are you wearing to work this winter?  Aritizia's Soho Boutique hosted a preview of their winter and holiday collection last week.  While this clothing chain is new to many of my fashion friends, they have been a go-to destination for Canadian peeps for years.

They are not selling revolutionary new styles, but are trend driven and sophisticated at a great price point.  This was the store that you graduated to after you left behind the fast fashion and high street stuff of placed like H&M to be taken seriously with the proper wardrobe of an adult.

I love that their designer look sportswear is price accessible to almost everyone. The super soft jersey and silk tunics I just purchased I have already spent days lounging around in, ($45-$75).  Their new fall dresses run mostly from $50-$165.

While I know their clothing pretty well, I am quite excited about their new handbag collections.  They are launching full grain leather bags in chic structured silhouettes in a price range between $200-500.  I have to say, most contemporary leather handbags with high end details like hand-painted edge coating and custom hardware are positioned in a much higher price point.

I don't know how Canadians manage to do it.  Like Joe Fresh, they seem to be able to produce stylish, budget-friendly fashion at prices that Americans just scoff at.  This is coming from me, who has worked on the development side of sportswear and leather.

Hello Aritzia, nice to see another ex-pat in town.

Ms. Fabulous Hosts The Tipsy Tea Party

Thank you to all my lovelies who indulged me and my drunken tea party.  The theme (besides tipsy tea beverages) was the gorgeously quirky film The Grand Budapest Hotel

Hubby, my cousin and I decorated the ballroom to look like a musty 1930’s hotel. They found tapestry rugs and over-sized leather chairs.  Within the ballroom’s kitchen, I found hundreds of dainty, hand-painted China cups that were likely inherited from the restaurant that was onsite back when the building was first established in the 1920’s. They were accompanied by tea plates that had cup indentations so guests could walk around with their cuppa and treats with one hand.

Guests included my peeps from the fashion industry.  Bloggers included Elaine Fioravanti of Best Dressed Ginger, her friend Lauren of College Fashionista, Mdivani Monroe of Ladies Who Lunch and Cassandra of CameraMade Me Do It.

We had macarons from the Macaron Café in the Fashion District. I put together mushroom tarts and a selection of tea sandwiches like brie and fig tartines. My friend Nyree from Macy’s made the most amazing Amaretto cake (that I am still eating non-stop). Janet baked rich brownies. Of course, a drunken tea party needed the teas that made you drunk. I made a big batch of blood orange, black vanilla tea and bourbon if you wanted to get tipsy quickly.

Recipe for our tea inspired cocktail

Blue & Green Duchess Tea:
(Makes 1 pitcher)
5 jasmine green tea bags
5 cups   of boiling water
¼ pitcher of fresh lemonade
¾ cup of fresh blueberries
1 cup of VanGogh Vodka Blueberry Acai Vodka
Handful of fresh mint

Brew the tea and leave the bags to steep as it continues to cool.  Refridgerate the tea until it gets cold.  Add lemonade and vodka.  With a wooden spoon, muddle the blueberries and mint and let the flavors steep together for a half hour more.  Enjoy!  It was the perfect summer cocktail.

Of course, I love to pamper my guests.  Marcela Nails & Wax provided manicures with Sally Hansen and OPI Nail Lacquer colors that they had provided over the past year.

What did we think of the movie itself? Ralph Fiennes put in a comedic and touching performance I did not expect.  The story had wicked and morbid humor (perfect for this crowd).  The beautiful aesthetic of the film is what I come back to Wes Anderson for time and time again.

Happy summer times!

Echo Design & Hunt Slonem Collaboration

hunt slonem scarf
hunt slonem parrots
echo design bunny
Welcome to the jungle! I had the privilege of visiting the studio of Hunt Slonem for his collaboration with Echo Design this week.  The renowned artist is famous for his tropical hued works of parrots and rabbits.

The accessory group Echo Design is known for mid-priced fashion forward accessories across many categories.  While they were always trend-driven, they wanted to do collaboration with an artist.  It turns out that executives were friends of a friend of Slonem and the rest was on display at his studio.

The studio was huge, with an aviary in the back housing his large bird collection.  Open plan rooms were filled with eclectic furniture and photos of his celebrity and society friends.  There was the famous “Bunny Wall” a popular motif that most of his fans associate with his work.  The mass collections of bunny works are actually an artistic exercise for him to practice his technique.  Many art professors will teach that repetition and meditation is a key tool to mastering your work.  It turns out; brushstroke rabbits translate very well into a fashion print.

Hunt Slonem has always been inspired by nature.  He chased butterflies in Nicaragua, grew orchids in Hawaii and of course his very vocal parrots on site.  My cousin and I were a little disappointed that we did not find a collection of bunnies to hop around with, but one has to stop somewhere.
The Echo Design collection itself consists of several scarf designs and tote bags.  Scarves were produced in several sizes, some large enough to be worn as a simple dress.  The colors reflected the vibrant hues of the artist’s work.  The prints included Hunt Slonem’s butterflies and his famous rabbits.

I could see this collection selling at galleries and museums.  However Echo Design is staying true to its fashion and department store customer base, they are just bringing a bit of art into the mix.

National Museum of the American Indian - Identity in Costume

native american beading
native american costume
indian silver jewelry
Can you say the story of your identity is told in your wardrobe?  I visited the National Museum of theAmerican Indian in Washington D.C.  I, of course, went straight for the costume and fashion related exhibits.

The museum itself was beautifully conceived.  I loved how individual tribes curated their own sections of the museum to tell their own stories.  The museum doesn’t shy away from the often ugly history or painful experience of native people in the United States.

The major goal of the museum is conservancy.  There are culturally sensitive collections such as ceremonial items and human remains.  What I found most fascinating was that so much of each tribe’s identity was represented in what they wore.  Motifs etched or embroidered into jewelry and clothing could be a narrative of family history.  Materials like shells, fur, teeth could tell you exactly where someone came from.  Accessories, armor, jewelry could define who that person was within the community, like a chief or healer.

The museum also focuses on contemporary artists and designers that are inspired by Native American culture.  There were galleries of fashion and accessories that featured traditional patterns in modern silhouettes.  Sleek high heels in traditional beading, carved jewelry, and woven textile coats were perfectly chic with a rich history behind the design.

Like many of the best museums in Washington D.C., the National Museum of the American Indian is free to visit.  If you are not able to explore the museum in person, their online archives are extensive.  Go see the country’s roots.

Indah Swimwear 2015

indah 2015
Going tribal are we?  Indah Clothing’s 2015 collection was the last runway presentation of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week for the season.  Was everyone a little fatigued? Sure.  Was this fashion show worthy of keeping wearing photographers awake in the pit? Yes.

Hand woven and crochet pieces were prominent throughout this collection.  Tassels and ethnic jewelry embellished the swimwear and cover-up lounge looks.  Animal prints from zebra to tiger to African tribal prints were the patterns of choice.

Hair on the models was blown out wild and BIG.  Here is what I learned about runway modelling from this show… Hair that is too big and bare feet does not make a model look tall and leggy.  More realistic? Sure.  Also, there is a big difference between seasoned runway walkers and enthusiastic newbies.  I applaud the spirited ladies who attempted to flirt, wink and dance.  However, the lack of experience showed when models swayed awkwardly.  Attempted winks looked like a seizure and duck faces do not equal sexy.  There was a model whose eyes were downcast during every twirl, making all shots of that model unusable.

After a few days of Amazon goddesses dominating the catwalk, this show was a shock.  For those who think modelling is nothing more than walking up and down a straight line, this was the show that proved real skills are needed.  Experienced models know their best poses.  They know where to look at the camera and how to convey any type of attitude required in a way that makes a great photo as opposed to acting a certain way in a social setting.

I tried to learn a bit more about Indah as a brand.  They did not send me a press release before or after the show.  Their website only shows a video under multiple tabs.  Their blog has no text, just photos.  I could not learn anything about the designer.  Their Facebook page mentions the brand has roots in Indonesia.  Is this label a ghost?  Send me to Bali and I’ll find out.

Belusso Swimwear 2015

belusso 2015
belusso swimwear
Are you ready to tie one on?  That was the definitive detail of the Belusso 2015 swimwear collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim

Exaggerated ties were prominent in a majority of the looks on designer Kirsten Ehrig-Sarkisian’s runway.  The super-long ties were swung around from the side of the hips, front cleavage, back muscles, around the neck.  While probably not practical for swimming through coral embedded waters, it does feature a great way to create movement to highlight whatever part of the body you want to draw attention to.

The other signature features of this collection were the pretty vibration prints.  Many of the suits sported beautiful patterns that resembled sound waves.  The abstract, fluid prints were offered in a muted black and grey combination or sweet pastel mix.

The Belusso collection is Los Angeles based, but the owner clearly loves a lifestyle in St. Tropez too.  There is a focus on luxury for this label.  The cover-ups are upscale lounging pieces often made from silk or fine cotton voile.  Ehrig-Sarkisian also loves to embellish her pieces with semi-precious stones too.  Celebrities from Mariah Carey to Jade Jagger are fans.  In fact, the name “Belusso” is a variation of the Italian words for “beautiful” and “luxury”.

Now, if only someone would take ME to St. Tropez so I can test-drive these styles properly.
Kirsten Ehrig-Sarkisian
