MIAMI FASHION WEEK: Mikoh Swimwear 2015

Hawaii made its way to South Beach via California at the Mikoh Swimwear show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim.  The West-Coast based label was founded by siblings Oleema and Kalani Miller.  The show had a fantastic opening dance number performed by the Aloha Islanders.  The Polynesian theme carried through in the leafy crowns worn by some of the models and palm tree prints.

The swimwear looks themselves were fashionable, wearable styles meant for active use.  Even their website’s opening video is of a woman swimming underwater.  There was even a blue water splash print.  The suits have simple, basic silhouettes but often featured cut-outs for extra sex appeal.  The sisters grew up next to the ocean among a family of surfers and designers.  This collection was meant for women who play hard and work hard, and the women behind it live that lifestyle themselves.

MIAMI FASHION WEEK: SUBOO 2015

suboo miami
suboo 2015
It's the tough girl from Down Under.  Suboo's 2015 resort collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim was a parade of strong women with an attitude.

There were many variations of bikinis and one piece swimsuits with halter neck styling.  The necklines had interesting twists, straps and wrap details.  I loved several of their bold prints, like a navy, peach, black and white camouflage pattern.  There was a graphic black and white art print and wild floral design as well.

There were a lot of looks using a slick shiny black fabric that gave the appearance of leather.  High-necked severe tops were easily balanced with sexy cut-outs on bikini bottoms.  The leather look, along with the models' fierce expressions gave the impression that this collection would be the most intimidating (fashionable) gang at the beach.

The Suboo collection is based in Australia.  I'm wondering if the upcoming reboot of Mad Max was an inspiration for creative director Sue Di Chio?  Actually, the aesthetic and movement of modern dance was the muse for this season.  That look of determination on the models actually refers to the discipline of the art.

Nick Irwin of TIGI created the pulled back, high on the crown hair.  Vincent Longo was responsible for the dark eyes and ZOYA created the sharp white manicure on the models.

If you are a beach beauty who does not want to be messed with. The Suboo 2015 collection is perfect for you.

MIAMI FASHION WEEK: Frankie's Bikinis 2015

Hawaii meet Miami.  The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim runway hosted the debut of Frankie's Bikinis cruise collection.  Swimwear prodigy Francesca Aillo created a bohemian, laid back collection inspired by the island of Kauai.

Her swimsuits did indeed include many bikini styles.  The colors pulled from nature, like sky blue, sand, earth, shell white, gardenia red...  The details were simple, like ties and crochet.  Some reminded me of the string games of my childhood.  The fits were designed for the girl who likes to play.  The construction was made for active women, structured for those who actually intend to get in the water.

The models were styled in loose, beachy hair by BLO Blow Dry bar, with natural make-up looks by BeautyBlender cosmetics.  Accessories were very simple, natural grasses wrapped around wrists, maybe a hand knotted bracelet or two.

Francesca Aillo is the youngest designer to have ever shown her collection in South Beach for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim.  Clearly, there is a lot more style to come.

MIAMI FASHION WEEK: Maaji Swimwear 2015

It was Derby time at the Maaji Swimwear show for Mercedes Fashion Week Swim.  Columbian esigners  Juliana LondoƱo and  Nani Valenzuela created a “Royal Riders” theme for their runway.  The collection featured a mix of swimwear and active wear with a preppy, equestrian aesthetic with a twist.

Gingham, plaids, detailed horse prints and florals were executed in neon and nude colors.  The bikinis were paired with tweed jackets, riding helmets, riding crops and platform heeled oxfords.  Jackets had variations of racing ribbons.  Skimpy suits were worn with traditional cardigans and houndstooth capes.  The tennis rackets, suspenders and jockey clubs all made for an adorable tongue-in-cheek take on stuffy country club style.

Elaborately printed rash guards would look great doing double duty as a fashion top.  Board shorts for men had corresponding prints with contrast waistbands.  This was the one show I attended that offered a few men’s styles and male models to present them.  The bit of beefcake was much appreciated by the female guests in attendance in the long sea of bikinis.  Celebrity guests included TV personalities Serinda Swan, Adriana de Moura and Luann de Lesseps.

Hell, I know I’m ready for a ride…

MIAMI FASHION WEEK: Minimale Animale 2015

Smoke, mirrors and rock n' roll.  The Minimale Animale fashion show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim was a good time, especially for all of the male photographers in the pit.  The edgy swimwear collection by Cassandra Kellogg had a minimalist, sexy fetish vibe to it.

While the motorcycle helmets were gimmicky, they established the biker chic vibe she was going for.  The added bonus of keeping your attention on the body and therefore the swimsuit the model was wearing.  The helmets also allowed for the "liberation" of the model's hair and face at the end of the show, where the models could shake out their tresses in spectacular fashion to the cheers of the admiring male fans.

The designer loves her music.  She taught herself how to make swimwear and the brand got its start when she sold her collection at festivals.  The Minimale Animale collection is definitely not for the shy girl.  The skimpy bikinis leave little to the imagination and highlight what little is left.  If you have the rockin' bod to carry these off, by all means, show it off.

Rock on ladies, rock on.

MIAMI FASHION WEEK: Luli Fama 2015

luli fama 2015
luli fama mbfwswim
It's Carnival time in South Beach.  Luli Fama always brings the festivities to the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim.   To open their 2015 runway show, they brought dancers on stilts adorned in elaborate feathered costumes.

Designer Lourdes Hanimian and her brother-in-law Augusto developed the label after working with their aunt in the swimwear industry.  That’s a new family business combination.  Luli Fama was born with the influences of Miami and Cuba.  You can see the cultures mixing in the lush prints of the collection.  Painterly brush strokes are blended with jungle florals and animal prints.  Retro paisley cover-ups are mixed with solid pastel bikinis with metallic details.

Crochet accents embellished straps and bikini bottoms.  Innovative hip cut outs added a sexy touch.  Fishnet style knits were seen in tunics, cropped tops, skirts and dresses as cover-up options that showed off the swimsuit underneath.

Luli Fama attracts celebrities like Beyonce Knowles, Shakira and now LeAnn Rimes who sat in the front row.  She tweeted her appreciation of the itsy bitsy bikinis on the catwalk.

MIAMI FASHION WEEK: WildFox Couture Swimwear 2015

wildfox couture 2015
comic art fashion

Wildfox Couture Swimwear brings out the rebel in all of us.  The West Coast label was known for its vintage graphic aesthetic and sense of humor.  The swimwear show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim was presented in the same spirit.

A massive storm had hit the Raleigh Hotel grounds right before the runway rehearsal.  It left the plastic covered catwalk wet and slippery, even from inside the tent.  Models attempting to rehearse in heels quickly (painfully) met the floor head-on.

There were several themes running through the Wildfox 2015 collection.  There were the wildflowers.  This included sweet bikinis in pastels and ruffles.  Solid pastels or floral printed suits would be paired with ladies in flower crowns. There was a literal flower bikini on the runway, clearly not meant for the pool.

There was a sporty, athletic group that had rash guard tops, scuba and mesh styling.  The graphic art group was a lot of fun.  Swimwear graphics were inspired by comic-books, pop culture and superheroes mingled with suits that had suggestive text printed across provocative areas of the body.  Silly prints of hamburgers and wildly colored leopard prints were a lot of fun.

The models of the Wildfox Couture shows always look like they are having a GREAT time.  They sashayed to a soundtrack of my favorite dance tracks of the 1990’s.

Oh the memories…

MIAMI FASHION WEEK: L*Space by Monica Wise

l*space miami
lspace 2015
It was the mermaid parade at last night’s L*Space by Monica Wise show.  The show was styled with wet wavy hair to look like they were walking out of the sea on a runway printed with water patterns.

There were sexy fisherman’s net dresses and tunics that acted as cover-ups for the swimwear.  The swimsuits were a mix color blocked details, art deco prints and solids.  Feminine touches included ruffled bikini tops or wrapped details.   Colors included soft black, coral, foam green, shades of ocean and lapis blue.

The models were styled to have wet, wavy hair. Giant pearls were woven into their tresses or a part of long, hanging necklaces to enhance the mermaid royalty look.  Metallic tattoos from Flash Tattoos gave a fish scale effect to the skin.

I have to say, the models strutted their stuff as if they were wearing stilettos, even though many were in bare feet.  With swagger like that, I would love to see what they could do with a tail…

MIAMI FASHION WEEK: Mara Hoffman Swimwear 2015

mara hoffman swim 2015
parrot print

Mara Hoffman swimwear at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim is one of the most anticipated shows every season in Miami.

Her collection this summer took its muse from the designer’s recent trip to Guatemala.  She was inspired by the textiles, culture and landscape of the country.  The brightly colored prints reflect the motifs seen in the garments of the native people.  Graphically detailed tigers and parrots were featured across swimsuits and rash guards of my favorite pieces.

Mara Hoffman IS the embodiment of her brand.  The free flowing hair and models strolling the runway in loose dresses and caftans could be her relatives.  Strategic cut-outs and high-waisted bikini bottoms were sexy and flattering.  She blocked photographers from shooting her rehearsal because she wanted to ensure that everyone looked perfect.

Nick Irwin of TIGI haircare referenced the South American landscape was referenced with green palm fronds woven into their hair by.  The big cord jewelry worn by the models was made by Orly Genger by Jaclyn Mayer.  They were an updated variation of the arts and crafts found in the country.

Mara Hoffman embodies the easy chic of her collection. She seamlessly blends into the catwalk with her models.

MIAMI FASHION WEEK: Beach Bunny 2015 Featuring The Blonds

From the very first runway look, it was clear the Beach Bunny 2015 collection was not meant for the pool.  The Blonds, New York’s celebrated design duo collaborated with the swimwear label for an unbelievable fashion show to end the night in Miami.

A fashion show by the Blonds in New York usually means that the runway will be transformed into the fiercest nightclub.  Their over the top looks are sought after by the likes of Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry to name a few.    Their work with the Beach Bunny collection continued in this tradition.

The 1970’s hair, bombshell eye makeup and galactic fetish outfits looked like they walked straight out of the movie Barbarella.  It was a genius move to put a big fan on the end of the runway so the models would have the wind blowing through their sex kitten hair.  The beauty looks were styled by Tresemme’s Tyler Laswell.

The fashion incorporated everything from holographic fabrics, metallic studs, neon and jewels.  There were heavily embellished corsets paired with simple bikini bottoms.  There were bikini tops with corset lacing details.

Some of the suits clearly were not meant for retail. Others cleverly mixed lingerie details with functional swimsuit fabrics for a very sexy (but wearable) collection.  You might have to look underneath the oversized spiky bracelets and thigh high stilettos to see it.  Trust me, the male members of the audience would be happy to.

Beach Bunny and The Blonds have created a killer swim season for this planet or the next.

MIAMI FASHION WEEK: Poko Pano 2015

brazilian model
poko pano 2015

Splish splash. Poko Pano 2015 kicked off the first fashion show of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim right in the pool.  The famed historic swimming pool of the Raleigh Hotel in South Beach was a gorgeous setting for models to splash through with the collection.

Unfortunately, it was not ideal for the photographers who, like me just flew into the city.  One photographer started by dropping her batteries in the water.  The lack of an official photographer’s pit meant that everyone tried to find a spot around the pool without being in someone else’s shot.  I ended halfway up a tree and between spiky bushes.  Um, fun.

Still, the setting still managed to soothe the crankiness of the shooters.  The swimwear itself was wearable and pretty.  The look of models splashing through water instead of the stiletto-heeled catwalk strut was a refreshing change.  The dewy, bronzed look was fresh and appropriate for an afternoon in the water.

Brazilian designer Paola Robba created this

poko pano mbfwseason’s collection with the passion of Rio de Carnival and pride in her country’s team at the FIFA World cup. There were pieces that had an arts and crafts influence using a technique similar to a hand woven rag rug.  There were high-waisted bikini bottoms for a retro feel that suited the location.  Graphic tropical prints expressed her love for the warm location.

The Poko Pano 2015 collection succeeded in giving you an escape to South America.  The swimwear itself is perfect when you make that escape a reality.

Fashion Sketch Workshop with Renaldo Barnette

fashion sketches
renaldo barnette
How relevant is fashion illustration in today’s design industry?  Fans and media love to see a fashion designer’s sketch, but is it really used in the process of putting together a collection?  Renaldo Barnette is the answer to that question.

Renaldo has been a professional fashion illustrator hired by brands like Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Nicole Miller.  While some designers sketch for themselves, others rely on more experienced artists like Renaldo Barnette to specifically express their collection ideas in detail.
Take a look at his illustrations above.  Do you see the difference between these and the fanciful images you see in the media?  Fashion sketching for the purpose of clothing design is much more detailed.  If you ever studied fashion design at a reputable school, these principles are drilled into you for your entire portfolio development.

Your proportions need to be accurate.  Even if the typical fashion figure is not realistic to the average human being, your rendering of the clothing needs to be correct to the proportions of the figure you have drawn.  An advertising illustration can have a 10” waist with a gigantic ballgown skirt that defies gravity made of mystery space fabric.   In the process of design, the drawing of the fabric texture needs to be clear.  The movement and weight of the fabrics intended must be accurate.   Could a technical designer, draper or pattern maker recreate your look from viewing the sketch?

Almost every “designer” job posting I come across asks for Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator or InDesign experience.  Tech packs to factories at most major companies require detailed technical flat sketches drawn with mathematical precision (and no personality).  Even when I first graduated Parsons School of Design, being a full-time fashion artist was not a career path many could hope to aspire to as the industry made it clear that CAD would be standard.  The artistic prints that once were hand-painted in gouache are now completely cut from patterns with “brushstroke” functions in a computer program.

I am so happy to know that classic artistic talent can still result in a successful fashion career in the form of people like RenaldoBarnette.  While this may not be a priority in modern fashion programs anymore, the artist is teaching three workshops in fashion drawing starting with the upcoming Saturday.  Learn to sketch a collection like a professional.

So are you ready to draw with Renaldo Barnette? Register for his workshop today!

Theia Resort 2015

The THEIA resort collection for 2015 was inspired by artist Ellsworth Kelly.  This is an artist whose work is most recognized for its minimalist motifs, angled shaped and use of color.

Designer Don O'Neill went back to basics by using Kelly as muse.  The artist's work was required study for anyone taking color theory in art school.  As you can see, it was a fantastic basis for any designer forming their own view on graphics and choosing their palette for a collection.

Art critics have said that Kelly’s art was influenced by his military background.  They say that his experience with camouflage, construction/deconstruction led to his approach to art.  That may be reaching a bit, but who is to determine the path of any line of creativity?

The resort collection used the bold colors of Ellsworth Kelly's famous works.  The sharp angles are seen in the color blocked seaming.  The patterns found in some of his work are echoed in the woven textured fabric, sequin embroidery or brushstroke prints.

Beyond the cerebral, Don also designs practically.  The angles of the color blocked seams are cut to be very flattering on the body when the dresses are worn.  This is something red carpet celebrities and customers both appreciate.

Don O’Neill recently dressed Linda Wallem for her wedding to singer Melissa Etheridge this spring.   The happy couple was so pleased with the gown that Ms. Etheridge sang a personal greeting as a thank you.  Hell that beats any card I have ever received!

I personally will make it my mission to travel to any destination posh enough to wear this THEIA 2015 resort collection. It was simply gorgeous.

Remembering Eileen Ford

eileen ford life magazine
A pioneering entrepreneur and the Godmother of the modelling industry passed away Wednesday.  Eileen Ford was 92.  Along with her husband Jerry, she built the the most powerful modelling agency in the world.  She modernized how the industry was run by upgrading how the profession itself was perceived.  Both clients and models were under a stern policy of how they conducted themselves both ethically and in professional decorum.

Eileen Ford was the main talent scout for the agency.  The company is credited with helping to establish models into  celebrities in their own right, like Naomi Campbell.  They also raised the paydays for models to astronomical heights as a result.

Being a "supermodel" was a milestone for the industry, but still only a stepping stone for some women under the Ford umbrella.  Award winning actresses like Candice Bergen and Kim Basinger got their start as Ford Models.  Martha Stewart put herself through college as a Ford Model before building her lifestyle empire.

Many considered her a mother figure as she personally oversaw not just bookings of her models, but their careers, grooming, dressing and diet.  Models have been known to live in Eileen Ford's personal home in Manhattan and in the Hamptons.  She saw herself taking responsibility for the young women since they no longer were in the home with their own families.

Goodbye Eileen!

Kipling Bags Go Back to School with Megan Nicole

megan nicole kipling

Last night's Kipling bags event co-hosted by Megan Nicole was old school. Literally, the event took place in a crumbling old school.  The location was as suffocating, sweaty and as uncomfortable as the poor souls who were relegated to summer session remember.

This was an event that was just baffling to me from a PR standpoint. Initial Impressions mean a lot when you are courting the press.  The first thing a media guest had to do was climb a few flights up dirty school stairs to an overheated classroom.   The stuffiness made you want to leave immediately, before you had a chance to look at the collection.

Don't get me wrong, the school theme was cute, but it didn't have to be taken so literally to get the point across, especially at the expense of practicality and comfort.

Co-host Megan Nicole was touted as a "YouTube Darling".   She was adorable and performed for the guests.  When I worked at VF Corporation, the Kipling team shared our office floor.  Their collaborating celebrity back then was pop diva Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas.  This was when the band was at the height of their success.  Now the brand has recruited a karaoke version of a pop star recruited from social media..  My how times (and budgets?) have changed.

The bags I did get a chance to look at had cute prints, executed in their classic backpack and pouch shapes. Many of them were miniature in size.   I wasn't sure if they were meant for children? Were they supposed to be ironically mini like a phone case?  PR #FAIL number 2: I asked two different representatives this question and neither one had a clue.  I also asked when these would be available in stores.  Again, the answers were "I don’t know....soon I assume?"   Wow, that is helpful.  As a blogger, I have the freedom to write on my own timeline.  Howeve, for time sensitive publications putting together gift guides and back to school round ups, this is vital information that was missing.  A brand could be missing the opportunity for coverage that I assume they would want for potential shoppers...

I took it upon myself to grab a catalog to make some sense of the collection.   The catalog heavily promoted their monogram feature.  This was on trend for today's selfie obsessed world.  Megan Nicole smile sweetly from the pages.  I still have no idea what the intended customer or function of the mini bags are.  Get it together marketing peeps!

Schiaparelli Couture Fall 2014

schiaparelli fw14
schiaparelli fw14 fw15

Welcome the return of the "Italian", Schiaparelli Haute Couture.  The whimsical atelier made its return to the Haute Couture shows after a 60 year hiatus (not counting collaborations with Lacroix and others).

Designer Marco Zanini was tasked with updating the collection for modern times.  The label’s signature “shocking pink” was incorporated into a long gown or floor length swing coat.  Elsa Schiaparelli’s love nature motifs were seen all over this group.  There were ivy and leaves in the jewelry.  Hand painted prints included beautiful, but tongue-in-cheek urban animals like pigeons, squirrels and rats.  Flourished embroideries and dimensional embellishments are trademarks of the brand, but very contemporary in this collection.

The built up shoulder was a classic Schiaparelli shape, being used to elongate and give a Hollywood femme fatale look to many of the sleek, full length silhouettes on this runway.

Fur was used in oversized handbag clutches.  Glycerine treated feathers were worked together for a bolero that emulated monkey fur.  Hats took the form of vintage shapes like feathered caps and turbans.  There were gravity-defying sculptures and even a luxe birthday party hat.

I love seeing the spirit of Elsa Schiaparelli back in today’s fashion scene.  Is it a little wicked of me to wish that Marco Zanini would prank Karl Lagerfeld to restart the Chanel/Schiaparelli rivalry?

Cynthia Rowley Dresses - Resort 2015

Do you love dresses like I do?  One of my favorite sportswear designers just launched a sweet dress collection.  Cynthia Rowley dresses are the answer to the questions I constantly receive of what to wear to a wedding, prom, formal garden party...

The dresses are pretty, sure.  There is more than meets the eye of course.  The designer has a great eye for embellishment.  There were edgy metallic star-burst beaded shoulders, crystal florets and sparkling neckline.  Cynthia Rowley is a stylish surfer.  She translated that sport into some fantastic neoprene styles with a trompe l'oeil print.  See that dainty blue and white "embroidered" group on the right?  At first glance, it looks like a delicate floral sequin embroidery.  Take a closer look, and you see a printed scuba dress.

Are you ready to dress for a special occasion? Just find your way to a Cynthia Rowley dress.

4th of July DIY

It's Independence Day! Party at home, BBQ and indulge in some stylish 4th of July DIYs.

For a great round up of nail art inspired by the red, white & blue, I love to check out Pinterest for patriotic nail art.

American flag prints often look cheesy if they are not designed well for clothing.  However, this painted denim short from Brit & Co has that lived-in, American look that is perfectly hipster:

One of my favorite lifestyle sites is SheKnows.  If you are looking for a patriotic jewelry project, try these beaded hoop earrings.  Simple, doable, you can make them in time for strawberry shortcake.

Beach Hair Repair from Neutrogena

Yeay! It is finally beach weather.  Unfortunately, the ocean, sunlight and chlorine are not as happy to see me as I am to see them.  My first real weekend at the Hamptons left me with distressed locks and sun damaged hair.  Funny how you can remember to put sunscreen on your face, but then completely forget to protect your tresses.

Summer sprung up on me out of a long winter and absent spring.  I forgot what spending hours outdoors could do to your skin and hair.  I recently put my hair through a digital perm to get that beach wave look for the days in between excursions, but it takes some moisture out.
Putting a lot of product in my hair makes it feel greasy after a few hours.  I remembered that I always used to use Neutrogena as a cleanser in my teen years for minimalist, effective cleaning power.  I was happy to find that they made a triple hair repair product line.

Testing for myself, I took my suffering tresses to the shower.  I used Neutrogena’s Triple Repair Fortifying shampoo and conditioner to deal with the sand, sun and chlorine damaged hair problems.

After towel drying my hair, I also worked in a dollop of the Neutrogena Triple Repair Fortifying Leave-In Treatment.  It helps me repair breakage and reduces split ends by about 97%.  Most noticeably, the treatment keeps the flyaways and frizzy strands from standing up from my head.  What is it with the humidity and dry hair that makes you look like an extra from “Something About Mary” ?

Keeping my hair dryer on medium power, I used my fingers to gently lift my wet wavy hair to remove the water from my hair.  To keep some curl without damaging the strands, You can gently twist the hair with your fingers while you are drying.  If you don’t want the weight of the hair to pull the crown flat, you can lift at the top and blow dry the hair in the opposite direction of how it grows.

That’s it. No additional curling irons, round brushes, pins or curlers.  I am a low maintenance girl when it comes to doing my hair in the morning.  When I hit the beach, I want maximum time for the actual beach.

Sun kissed waves are for the ocean and with the help of Neutrogena Triple Repair, my hair.

Canadian Designer Spotlight: Hilary MacMillan

hillary macmillan fashion
hillary macmillan 2014
Happy Canada Day my fashion peeps!  I thought I would introduce you to another Canadian fashion designer this July 1stHilary MacMillan is a relative newcomer to Toronto Fashion Week.   Her Fall/Winter 2014 was her second appearance at World Mastercard Fashion Week.
Her collection is sourced and manufactured locally and designed in Toronto.  Hillary and her sister Lindsay MacMillan also own a popular accessories boutique Elle Hardware in the trendy neighborhood of Queen West (Hubby and I always love to shop this area when we visit).

The family connections don’t end there.  For her inspiration this season, Hilary MacMillan looked to her Scottish ancestry as her muse.  The birds, tartans and hunting culture may be from the Highlands, but they are also very much a part of Canadian heritage as well.  The first Prime Minister of Canada was a Scottish gentleman named Sir John A. MacDonald.  I only know that because my high school was named in his honor, and I saw tartans everywhere.  Also, history textbooks had old black and white photos of Canadian fur trappers.

The graphic illustration print of pheasants is both elegant and whimsical.  It works really with the sleek suits and sheath dresses.  The traditional tartan pattern is used in updated fashion silhouettes, giving it a fresh look.  The fur accessories, whether it is the over-sized handbag or neck wrap, has a raw, unfinished pelt quality.  Instead of the polished glam collars of other collections this season, the pelts look like they were freshly hunted, reminding you of where they came from.  I like that idea.  If you DO choose to wear fur, why shy away from its origin?  It is kind of like the farm to table idea in cuisine, but applied to fashion.

On this great Canada Day, get to know your design talent up North.  Hilary MacMillan is a fashion designer to watch!
