Happy Birthday Faberge

He's the Blingmaster of Russian aristocracy.  Peter Carl Faberge was a master goldsmith who created the most  elaborate jeweled pieces commissioned for the Czars Alexander III and Nicholas II.  He was most famous for his eggs.  They were exquisite works of art, made with precious metals, jewels and enamel. They   often contained a surprise inside like a jeweled pot of flowers or carriage and were made by a team of artisans.

Google paid homage to the jeweler today as their main graphic:

The jewelry was any girl's dream and the House of Faberge just launched its first NYC boutique to bring the royal jewels to anyone who can afford them.  The opening was held on the rooftop of Rockefeller center. Gotham's socialites were in attendance, like Olivia Palermo and Whitney Fairchild.  The boutique is located at 594 Madison Avenue.

You can view some of the famous Faberge eggs at the Kremlin Armoury and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Fashion Institute of Technology - Class of 2012

FIT fashion
The Fashion Institute of Technology had one of the most flamboyant shows of the design school grads around town this month.  Those who could not attend the show live were able to stream it in 3-D at home.

Categories from lingerie, womens wear, menswear, and childrens were interpreted in a variety of techniques and looks.  Students worked under designer critics like Victor Alfaro, Josie Natori and Michelle Smith to create their collections.  The clothing then went through a rigorous judging process to be included in the show by fashion industry bigwigs like Elle Magazine's Joe Zee, VH1's Alana Kelen and Harper's Bazaar editor Laura Brown.

Sailing Style in the City

Ah yes, Memorial Day Weekend heralds the beginning of summer.  In New York City, the summers mean outdoor cultural events, the transition from black to bright colors in fashion and lots of cocktail filled soirees.

My fellow Glam bloggers and I enjoyed a grey, but delightful day cruising the Hudson River and snapping patriotic photos of Lady Liberty (appropriate for the upcoming holiday, no?)

When you put a bunch of fashion bloggers on a boat in warm weather, you get to preview the best of summer goodies.  While I love hitting the beach at Montauk, I am a target for sunburns and wrinkles.  I was happy to try out Hawaiian Tropic's new Silk Hydration Lotion with 50 SPF.  While Hubby thinks it's excessive (he's fine with 12 SPF) the 50 is perfect for me.  Greasy sunscreens irritate my skin, but I was happy to find that this one left my skin soft (probably the shea butter) and did not feel oily at all.

While I am guilty of wearing a grey summer dress, my colleagues from Tineey, Grease and Glamour, Wanderlust and Haute Mimi were wearing some fabulous bright prints.

I did manage to get some pop color into my outfit.  The bloggers were treated to specs from     .  Everyone wore very cute heels on board.  After 2 1/2 hours of waves though, everyone was grateful for the comfortable flip flops from Sanuk.  The sun did come out in spots and I Ski sunglasses provided protection.

Lucky us, we also left the boat with some goodies to battle the hot humid NYC summer...Thank you Fekkai, Goody Hair, OPI, Tarte and Urban Decay for keeping us pretty.

Hot Flavors of Summer Fashion

Memorial Day is coming up, so you had better be ready with your summer style!  I'm looking forward to warm weather cocktails and bright breezy frocks!  The top shades this year seem the align perfectly with the top flavors this season...

Tangerine Tango was named Pantone's color of the year.  Designers Vivienne Tam, Carlos Miele and Derek Lam certainly knew that.  They worked the color into elegant and flirty frocks perfect for a garden party or Hamptons gala...The perfect accessory?  How about a Citrus Squeeze?  Recipe here.
Remember having a lemonade stand when you were a child?  It was my first foray into entrepreneurship.  You can give the ultimate summer beverage a nice upgrade by making a Pucker vodka-infused Lemonade Lust.   Dress for success with a printed dress from Diane Von Furstenburg, jewelry from Lulu Frost, or swish gown from Cesar Galindo!
Throw a Raspberry Rave! There is a flattering shade of berry pink for everyone.  Naeem Khan has a bright shade with a lot of movement in his ruffled skirt.  Theia has multiple colors of pink in his crunchy cocktail frock and Farah Angsana has a deep raspberry concentrate in his dramatic gown.

What flavor flatters you?  Discuss on Facebook.

Break up with boring vodka! Pucker® Vodka is a premium vodka with unique flavors added that will give you a taste experience that’s as intense as it is unforgettable.  Whether you’re hosting a house party or out on the town, the bold flavors are perfect for sipping, mixing and dancing the night away! http://www.puckervodka.com/

Busy Brides Find BHLDN

retro bride
bridal accessories
Indie brides-to-be have found their wedding haven in BHLDN, an off-shoot of vintage inspired retailer Anthropologie.  Selling mostly online and their first two boutiques in Houston and now Chicago, the concept is a one-stop shop of all things pretty!

There are gowns and dresses with retro details like pleats and bows.  There are flapper inspired frocks with intricate art deco embroidery.  There are simple dresses that can be embellished with sashes and jewelry.  Fascinators, necklaces, belts all have a handcrafted, indie designer feel to them.  There is the BHLDN private label collection as well as selections from other curated designers.

Even more fun, the boutique extends into party decorations from tissue paper flowers to printed fans and garlands.  Prices are very affordable, like a short, organza ribbon embroidered dress for $280 to a full ruffled train gown at $2400.  A ceramic pair of bird shaped bottle openers are $28 to double ring placecards for $12.  A gorgeous blush flower fascinator was $150.

I wish this boutique was around when I was getting married.  It is anti-Bridezilla, for the unique, easy going bride who might be a hipster, might be an artist, doesn't want to confirm to the "Say Yes to the Dress" drama...

Sunday Blogger Love: Art at the Heart

Art At The Heart

For many of this week's submissions, art was the center theme. From DIY projects to festivals, museum exhibits and dramatic runway sets - there are so many ways that art manifests itself in the world of fashion, not just in the clothes we wear. We create it, it moves us, it changes our mood and makes our world a more beautiful and magical place. I loved reading posts about the Costume Institute's new exhibit, Chanel's crystal runway set - and even how to make a glitzy pair of Mui Mui-inspired sunnies.

Rembrandt THERSday at Townhouse Spa

It's nice to be pampered.  One of my favorite spas in the city, Townhouse Spa in Midtown Manhattan hosted a ladies day of spa treatments.  My fellow bloggers and I were treated to manicures, massages, red cocktails and treats courtesy of Rembrandt's line of teeth whitening products.

I tried and reviewed their new whitening strips which I really like.  My hubby is partial to their more traditional toothpaste and trays for your teeth method.   Also in the goodie bag were a bunch of Aveeno skin care products.  They're not fancy, but I find that I come back to them again and again because they have been the most effective on my skin (especially the times when I went through months of hives!) They were also the brand my allergist recommended.

If you love the couples spa experience, Townhouse Spa is the perfect venue.  A year ago, I booked Hubby and I for a romance package.  While many spas have the pink and frou frou thing going for it, this one is decorated in (male-friendly) rich browns and woods.  Their lounge serves cappucino and have tables serving up snacks and the New York Times (both of which Hubby promptly attacked).  Beside the still intact mani-pedi I had from the Rembrandt event, I had one of the best massages I have ever had with the therapist at this spa.  (Another male-friendly note, there are big flat screen tv's in the treatment rooms).

Ok, what you waiting for?  Treat yourself to something pretty today!

Rodarte Costumes the NYC Ballet Spring Gala

Kate and Laura Mulleavy designed costumes for Academy Award winning movie Black Swan with great fanfare (and controversy).  The gorgeous feathered costumes for Natalie Portman were as much the star as the Oscar winner herself.

Since then, the Rodarte designers have been on a roll with theatrical dressing.  They have collaborated with the Dutch National Ballet and just debuted the clean, modern, stripe costumes for the New York City Ballet
Spring Gala pictured above.  The team was a reunion of Black Swan creatives, with choreographer/dancer (and husband to Natalie Portman post-movie) Benjamin Millepied and the actress herself as gala chairman.

Up next?  The Mulleavy sisters are working on costumes for the opera.  Specifically, the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Don Giovanni.

I'm hoping they will tackle Broadway next...How about an update on Jekyll and Hyde?

Parsons School of Design - Class of 2012 Fashion Show

parsons fashion 2012

parsons fashion
The last few weeks, the top fashion design programs around New York City presented new talent to the world.  Parsons was my alma mater and they did me proud with their runway show.  2007 alumni, Carlie Cushnie and Michelle Ochs spoke about their experiences as graduates and presented the new class.

The runway show was an amazing presentation of childrenswear, menswear and womenswear.  The techniques ran from laser cut, digitally printed fabrics, expert tailoring, conceptual avant-garde or masterful knitting.  There were so many stellar designers, I can only show you the photographs below.  To learn about individual collection, download the media kit from the school.

A Trip to Land's End Fall 2012

Heritage company Land's End did a double play last week.  They showcased tailored men's sportwswear, dresses, bright children's wear and personalized home decor in Chelsea.  Next they presented Land's End Canvas, with a mix of their top fits and comfy fabrics at hot Lower East Side restaurant, Public.
The color palette for both presentations was bright, bright and bright.  While this brand is not the most fashion forward of labels, their strength is in hidden details and a classic American lifestyle.  At the first presentation, there was a station to show the company started with their classic canvas tote.  Guests had their initials monogrammed to go.

At the Canvas event, the collection was all about fits and details.  The slouchy slim was the most popular fit among women's pants, perfected by the technical design team and wear tested by employees.  Necktie fabric added hidden treasures on the underside of shirt collars and lining the collarband.  Super soft tencel fabrics were used to soften up classic shirt dresses.  The holiday gift room had rugged knit scarves and beer cozies, in addition to a stylized ski print.
If all the cable knits and chunky scarves didn't make you feel warm and fuzzy, the exit gift of Cane and Abe Freshwater Rum certainly did!

Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations

One of my biggest pleasures as a fashion reporter is the privilege of being able to preview the retrospectives of my fashion heroes.  In this case, it was the gorgeous exhibit of Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada.
The Metropolitan Museum show is a celebration of two powerhouse women.  Baz Luhrman and Catherine Martin (the team behind movies like Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Moulin Rouge) put together a series of stylish interviews imagining conversations between the fashion pioneers.  Throughout the exhibit, you can watch the designers discuss their experiences, their muse and the world around them throughout their career.

Much like the MOMA’s exhibit of Picasso and Matisse a few years back, the show her presents both designer’s work side by side to show how similar influences were translated into clothing, or how Schiaparelli might have influenced Prada.

At the same time, the exhibit also compares how the different eras influenced the designers differently.  For Elsa, her time period was all about focusing excitement from the waist up.  Her most noteworthy accessories included hats and wigs, elaborate fur/feather collars, jackets with heavy embellishment on the chest.  For Miuccia, she focused from the waist down, with graphic prints on skirts and amazing footwear.

Elsa Schiaparelli was an artist’s designer.  She was known for bringing surrealism into her work.  She was famous for her “shocking pink”, fanciful circus motifs and trompe l’oeil effects like printed rips.  Salvador Dali and Jean Cocteau were an influence.  Cocteau’s lip illustration became embroidery on a Schiaparelli gown, and a pocket detail on another.  The lips motif also inspired Miuccia Prada’s collection in silk prints.

This is a show not to be missed!

The exhibit will run from May 10, 2012 - August 19th, 2012 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Spring Beauty: My Top 5 Picks

One of fun things about being a blogger is that you get to try all sorts of fun beauty products.  The real story though, is determining which products do you love enough to spend your own money on after the PR provided samples are gone?

The five products I chose here are the ones I have been A) using and buying for years, or B) have been purchasing regularly since my first date with them!

1.) MAC lipstick.  I was at the Canadian fashion trade show way way back when Frank Toscan launched MAC cosmetics.  Who knew this homegrown line would dominate as the top collection with fashion divas and drag queens alike?  I have worn the Del Rio shade since high school, kissing the vanilla scented tube as my mainstay.  My springtime shade is Sophisto.

2) Garnier B.B. cream didn't look particularly sexy, but the the moisturizing tinted cream has replaced by daily moisturizer/sunscreen/foundation combo with one product.  It does help smooth out your complexion noticeably.  It's more affordable with one product too!

3) Nail Art is the biggest fashion AND beauty trend this year.  However, you need a very steady (ambidextrous) hand and a toMy fan patience.  I have neither.  My favorite easy manicure look is a glitter ombre combo.  I start with a medium shade like OPI's Coney Island Cotton Candy then dab on Sally Hansen's Xtreme Wear glitter  nail polish on the tips.  This technique hides lots of flaws.  Finish with a topcoat of Essie's Good to Go.

4)  I was initially skeptical of Revitalash and its claims.  It just sounded like the PR fantasy claims that every high priced eyelash product came with.  I gave my mother some products for her brows.  Brows have always been her point of insecurity, going so far as to tattoo some in.  It was a shock to me (and her) when after using the Revitalash on her brows and eyelashes, she actually had to pluck for the first time in her life.  I have since used their mascara regularly and still amazed at the results.

5) Maybelline has been a regular sponsor of Mercedes Benz Fashion week for several years now.  Thanks to them, I have tried a large range of their goodies.  I can't say I would use all of them again, but my hands down favorite is the New York Studio Volumizing eye shadow.  They make dramatic eye effects super easy, with a clearly mapped out lid shade, brow bone highlight shade, crease shade, liner and sparkles.

Ok, I showed you mine, now you show me yours. What are your favorite products of the season?

Spring Beauty: Smile Style

Mothers, grandmothers, boyfriends, strangers will all tell you that the prettiest thing on a woman is her smile.  My husband claims it was my smile that he noticed on the night we met.  You can put lip gloss and lipstick on your lips; even pump it full of collagen.  You can wax above and below.  However, you can’t add cosmetics on your teeth.

To battle this glaring void in the marketplace, dentists found ways to brighten up your not-so-pearly whites.  For those with the time and money, there were custom molds and prescription peroxide or laser treatments.  For most people the above options weren’t practical.

I was asked to try Rembrandt’s Intense Stain Dissolving Strips for two weeks.  I have to admit I was rather skeptical.  I had tried other strips before without much success.  The dissolving nature of them however, makes it much more convenient than I expected.  You just peel them out of their little packs and place them over your teeth.  About ten minutes later, the strips are gone, leaving a minty aftertaste.

Just a caveat…Before those ten minutes are up, you might not want to engage in conversation with anyone important.  The strips in the process of dissolving look like sticky threads of spittle, so time your whitening ritual.

The real question of course, is do they work?  Yes, I did find a noticeable difference after a week and a half.  I’m not a smoker or a red wine drinker, so I couldn’t test them against those stains.  However, I am definitely partial to tea and I found them much easier to use than my previous attempts at whitening.

So if a great smile is the biggest trend for your spring style, you know what you need to add to your season’s wardrobe.

Occupy Runway! Adrian Wu Fall 2012

adrian wu
guy fawkes fashion
Can a fashion collection be a beacon for social change?  Empress Josephine openly defied Napoleon's dictator-like ideas on womens' dress by becoming an fashion icon in her own style.  More recently, there was a movement to wear hoodies en mass in support of Trayvon Martin's family.

Adrian Wu is one of Canada's hottest young designers. His fall collection was called "Hierachy of Needs".  This was born from the designer's musings on European and American politics to human rights.  The models were accessorized with Guy Fawkes masks, brought to current fame from the movie, V for Vendetta.  More recently, the masks have become a symbol for the Occupy Wall Street movement and "hactivist" group Anonymous.

He was inspired aesthetically by new tailoring techniques he learned, such as inverted pleating.  He referenced vintage silhouettes from the House of Dior, (he dreams to lead the atelier one day) and used flannelette as a base, traditionally used for sleepwear.

Designers like Adrian Wu remind those of us in media that fashion can be thoughtful, socially relevant in addition to beautiful and wearable.  Now if only Joan of Arc could sew...
